Essay On Aboriginal Rights In Australia

641 Words2 Pages

Indigenous Australians have had a controversial place throughout Australian history, with World War 1 being one of the main events in this topic. Although there were no aboriginals that went to fight in World War I, it was not that they didn't want to because of their violent history with the British, it was because the British didn't allow them to enlist for World War 1.

Since the British settled in Australia, Indigenous Australians have had cultural conflict. The Europeans believed that Aboriginal people were lower than the settlers and that their culture was more primitive to the culture of the British settlers. An example of this is how the Aboriginal people had a very strong spiritual connection to the land. Land could not be owned by a single person but had to be looked after by all of the community. When British settlers saw that the land had no fences they took the land for themselves to be used for farming. Many Aboriginals were losing their land. It made it worse when the Aboriginal believed that to make it fair the Europeans shared their products made from the farm. The Aboriginals then took food from the farm without consulting the British which resulted in violent conflicts between the two. Over time the government began to give the Aboriginals more rights, although still not many. They were given a certain amount of land but were not allowed to leave without permission.

During World War 1 the British settlers still believed to be superior to the Aboriginals. 13 years after the settlers had arrived, the constitution of Australia did not include Aboriginals as Australian citizens and most were not allowed to vote even though they were the first inhabitants of the country.

There were many negatives surrounding the relationship between the Aboriginal people and the British around the time of World War I. Aboriginal involvement in the war is important to Aboriginal history and Australian history. It is important to know that Aboriginal people were there on the battlefield living, fighting and dying side by side with the British Australians and willing to sacrifice themselves for their nation that did not have much acceptance for them and did not regard them highly.

The involvement of Aboriginal Australians in World War I was also significant because it lead to an even greater involvement in World War II which around 3000 Aboriginals fought overseas for their country. World War II helped in closing division between British Australians and Aboriginals.
