The relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is key to understanding the play, Macbeth. Through unpacking their relationship, why and how the tragedy happens becomes clear.
Macbeth’s ambition to become King starts off with his encounter with the witches in Act 1, Scene 3. He is told that he will not only become Thane of Cawdor, but also King of Scotland. This pleases Lady Macbeth, she likes the idea of becoming Queen. Knowing Macbeth, Lady Macbeth knew that she needed to take matters into her own hands. She asks the spirits to release her from human thoughts, to set her free of weakness that might prevent her from doing the inhumane deed she thought her husband could not do, murder. This is seen in Act 1, Scene 5. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth of her plan to murder the current King, Duncan. Being a loyal servant to the King, Macbeth is hesitant. Despite his doubts, Lady Macbeth succeeds in persuading him to kill Duncan. This is a pivotal moment in the evolution of their relationship. We …show more content…

After Macbeth visits the witches again in Act 4, Scene 1, he becomes more self-assured and confident of himself because the witches tell him that no one will be able to harm him. Macbeth now thinks that he is invincible. With this newfound confidence, he starts to go on a killing spree. He kills anyone and almost everyone who he thought was in his way of ruling Scotland with great power. In Act 5, Scene 1, Lady Macbeth is seen and described to be weak, insane and unsure of herself. She is obsessed with removing the “damned spot” off her hand, the spot she got when she went back to clean up Macbeth’s mess. The guilt of planning Duncan’s death slowly kills her, and the fact that Macbeth starts to shut her out on decisions also leaves her alone and depressed.
