An everyday person, when asked to describe chocolate, would probably start by calling it "magic." The presence of chocolate in the everyday American life is an experience sought after, craved for, and bought for under two dollars at the corner convenience store. Indeed, chocolate is edible ecstasy that is put in everything: coffee, icecream, cereal, even the spicy sauce for Mexican mole. Chocolate has a cultural presence like no other food commodity; it is brought back to loved ones from the faraway places of Switzerland and Germany, it is given as a symbol of love, and moreover, it is the first thing everyone instinctually goes too when that loves does not work out. A teary-eyed young woman eating chocolate and watching romantic comedies has become so common it has become a cliche in American cinema. The Ivory Coast, also known as Cote D'ivoire in Africa is the source of about 35 percent of the world’s cocoa production. These cocoa beans were likely harvested by unpaid child workers that are being held captive on plantations as slaves. Chocolate companies use these cocoa plantations as their cocoa source for their chocolate products. And since the companies want to maximize their profit, they push plantation owners to lower prices, causing plantations to cut price any way possible (Philpott).
There are plenty chocolate manufacturers and shops, but in medium markets, almost all are still engaged in old standards and boring cheap domestic ingredients.
Chocolate has been a staple for societies in dozens of countries for centuries. The existence of chocolate can be traced back to the cacao bean utilized by the Olmec Indians. Chocolate went on a journey from pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, to Spain and the rest of Europe and eventually New World America. Although there is a countless amount of scholarship regarding chocolate, the research of Wilson, Dillinger (along with her associates), Lippi, Terrio and Norton have critical information pertaining to the topic of chocolate in Western Europe during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. All sources, with the exception of one of Norton’s sources, formulate a consensus from their research, that chocolate in Western Europe served multiple purposes

Social Studies education is a subject in today’s schools that is undervalued. The study of social studies in schools help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world (Seefeldt, Castle, & Falconer, 2010). When participating in social studies class children are learning so much about who they are, where they came from, how to succeed in the world, and more. Most of what we teach daily includes an aspect of social studies. But, since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 de-emphasis or nonexistence of elementary social studies is the national focus because of high stakes testing (Sunal, & Sunal, 2008).
