Salvador Dalí On May 11, 1904, an artist legend was born. Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, Marquis of Dalí de Púbol, or Salvador Dalí as he was professionally known, was an artist among many other things. He was born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. This is where the history of surrealism began. Dalí was a surrealism artist. He was known for his crazy images and eccentric personality. He was imaginative and weird and his behavior often caught more attention than his artwork did. His father was the exact opposite, he was a lawyer at and a notary. He had many ideas of how he thought a child should be. He believed in disciplinary action and a child who was clean cut around the edges. Needless to say, Salvador was the exact opposite of what his father had in mind. His mother, however, indulged in her sons eccentrics. She loved his art and just all around diverse way of being himself.
Young Dalí struggled with anger fits and tantrums. Due to these, he’d faced many ats of cruelty by the other kids in school and even his father. His father had no tolerance at all for Dalí’s outbursts or even differences. If he wasn’t obeying his father’s demands on how he should be, his father subjected him to the most unfair consequences. Dalí and his father’s relationship was nonexistent while he was very young. The competition for affection from his mother was like adding fuel to the fire. Dalí’s loss of his brother fueled him. He often would say, "[we] resembled each other like two drops of water, but we had different reflections. [He] was probably a first version of myself, but conceived too much in the absolute." His parents planted the seed in his head that he was the reincarnation of his brother, born 9 months before him, who perished of gastroenteritis. At a young age he produced highly sophisticated art work and both his parents supported his talent. In their summer home, his parents built him his very own art studio before he was able to enter school. His parents had seen his amazing talent and knew they needed to send him to art school. Salvador had his first exhibit in 1919 and it was open to the public. Three years later, in 1921, his mother died of breast cancer. Young Dalí was absolutely devastated by the loss of his mother. His father married his deceased wife’s sister, and his son didn’t like that, though he respected his aunt. But Dalí pressed on, becoming the father of Surrealism. Salvador Dalí was influenced by several different art styles. He was suspended from his school due to criticizing his teachers and starting a riot. He was imprisoned for a short while and then he returned to his school. However, he was later expelled for declaring that no authority in the building was competent enough to examine him.
