In order to understand why multiculturalism is good or bad we first need to find what multiculturalism education means. Multiculturalism is the schools and the teachers would be committed to learning and development systems where all students would have the skills and knowledge that they need to thrive and participate in a complex and all the challenging economy and society. Just like racism and prejudice cannot be permitted to hinder the progress of any individual, all young people are entitled to benefit from the richness of our multicultural society and to develop the understandings and skills they need to contribute as confident world citizens.
The key arguments in the articles in favor of multiculturalism in public schools were reasonable. As Lalit Wankhade said that every culture has its own value system. He said that the greatest revamp is required in the education system. It should incorporate the components which would help to inculcate tolerance and respect for each others. If people know about evolution and be educated on it, they will understand why cultures have different nature of social institutions and value systems. And by doing so everyone will have a basic understanding of every culture and everyone with their own culture will be treated equally and they will not boast up superiority of their own culture. What I learned from participating in this exercise that there are always going to be an advantage and a disadvantage of anything. Although I believe there are many advantages to multiculturalism education, there are also disadvantages of multiculturalism education that I agree to be a disadvantage. This exercise taught me to look at the bigger picture and read/listen to other people’s point of views and learn from them instead of ignoring them. It is important to listen to other people’s opinions of things to either make you stronger in what you believe in or even change your point of view after listening to others.
Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. According to Meriam Webster (n.d.), culture is “the beliefs, customs, arts, institutions, and the thoughts or products of a particular society or group.” Unfortunately, African Americans, Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews as well as various other cultural groups have been profoundly discriminated against and negatively stereotyped (Good Therapy org.). With the frequent mingling of cultures in educational settings, the workplace, and in the social arena, we are bound to encounter cultural differences.

However, when you go beyond that and try to suggest a different way of arriving at theat culturally integrated society, everyone seems to have a different opinion on what will work. Since education is at the root of the problem, it might be appropriate to use an example in that context. In 1980, the American school, Stanford University came up with a program - later known as the "Stanford-style multicultural curriculum" which aimed to familiarize students with traditions, philosophy, literature and history of the West. The program consisted of fifteen required books by writers such as Plato, Aristotle, Homer, Aquinas, Marx and Freud. By 1987, a group called the Rainbow Coalition argued the fact that the books were all written by DWEM's or Dead White European Males. They felt that this type of teaching denied students the knowledge of contributions by people of colour, women, and other oppressed groups.
The world is made up of many different types of people, each one having his or her cultural background. Over the years, the United States has become increasingly populated with cultural diversity. This influx has prompted school administrators to recognize the need to incorporate multicultural programs into their school environment including classroom settings, school wide activities, and curriculum as it becomes more evident that the benefits of teaching cultural diversity within the school setting will positively influence our communities, and ultimately the entire nation’s future. The purpose of this paper is to share the pros and cons of multicultural education in the classroom. Additionally, I will express my views compared to those in the reading requirements for this assignment, as well as, new knowledge obtained through the research. Finally, I will share situations where I was challenged introducing a multicultural issue during a class.
Just because other perspectives are incorporated in the classroom, this doesn’t mean that everyone will become more understanding and appreciative of other cultures.
