Michelle Obama is a very successful person that has done many things for our country that you probably never even realized. Read more to find out more about Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama was born on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois. Michelle was the first African American First Lady can trace her ancestry through five generations of history, from slavery to the White House. Michelle’s challenges shaped her into who she is today which makes her a very successful person.
Michelle attended Princeton University, graduating from laude in 1985, and went on to earn a degree from Harvard Law School in 1988. Following her graduation from Harvard, she worked at a Chicago law firm, where she met her husband, future U.S. president Barack Obama.

She says "Knowing that after eight years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin color." She implied this to a Facebook post by a West Virginia mayor in honor of Trump's win that called her an "ape in heels" (Michelle Obama Has Repeatedly Faced Racism as First Lady. Here’s How She Responded).
Michelles approach to dealing with the rude comments and racism has been "when they go low, I go high," she doesn't want to pretend she can just brush off these comments, she said. That would discount the real hurt that racism and sexism inflict. (Michelle Obama Speaks Out About the Racism She Faced As First Lady).
By overcoming the racism and rude comments it has made Michelle a more successful person. Here are some examples. Michelle attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, the city's first magnet high school for gifted children, were among other activities, she served as the student government treasurer. In 1981, Michelle graduated from the school as class salutatorian. Following in her older brother's footsteps, Michelle then attended Princeton University, graduating cum laude in 1985 with a B.A. in Sociology. She went on to study law at Harvard Law School, where she took part in demonstrations calling for the enrollment and hiring of more minority students and

By Michelle doing this it made us healthier, more active and also decreased America’s obesity. Hopefully Michelle’s influence carries on for future generations because we do not want to all be unhealthy and obese if there is something we can do about it.
If Michelle Obama never existed we probably would’ve never realized how unhealthy we were. Nor would we ever have realized how common obesity was becoming in America. If it wasn't for her America would not know how to eat healthy or how to exercise.
“Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude.” (Michelle Obama). From this quote we should learn that your success is up to you. You determine how successful you are not anyone else. This means you need to work hard in order to have a successful life and be a successful person. You and only you determine your
Manchester, Kentucky is a small town, fighting an obesity crisis. “The national obesity rate for adults is 24 percent; in Manchester and surrounding Clay County, it’s been estimates to be as high as 52 percent” (407 Haygood). Some of the issues in the town are, that the residents do not want to acknowledge, or are ignorant of the issue of obesity. Other issues in this town include limited physical activity, and poor food choices. Certain aspects of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign could change the obesity crisis in Manchester, if they are portrayed in the right manner.
Chuck D and Johnson in their article state that while Obama is in office they with the rest of the African American population hope to see a smaller wealth gap between white people and African Americans as well as a lower percentage of homelessness (45). This couple not only strongly believes in Obama, but also that he can bring reform to the country. Chideya in her article talks about Obama facing many problems that need fixing in the United States, and that he should focus mostly on education (136). This is another example of looking ahead into Obama's presidency and urging him to focus primarily on education. Lastly, Cleage writes about Michelle Obama and how she is as amazing and influential to the world as her husband is. She states, "Michelle Obama would still be a very powerful woman" (27), even if she did not marry Barack Obama. Cleage feels so strongly about Michelle Obama that she goes as far as to say that the First Lady is the best of the new Americans and that she really is America (28). She is trying to say that it was not just the president that changed the US, it was the entire Obama family and that with both Michelle Obama and Barack Obama in power great changes can be made for the country. These writers are imploring Obama to bring change to America since now there is a powerful
Michelle Obama is without a doubt aware of this, and it is no wonder that her speech is of the persuasive kind, trying to convince the voters that a vote for the fellow democratic Hillary Clinton is a vote for a bright future for the US. The audience can be divided into two groups: the primary and the secondary audience. The primary audience consists of the people gathered at the Democratic National Convention who are watching her speak live. The secondary audience is made up of the general public who hears, sees or reads the speech later. Michelle Obama’s speech is mainly aimed at the general audience though, which is very clear at the beginning of the speech: “You know, it’s hard to believe that it has been eight years since I first came to this convention to talk with you” (p. 1, l. 1-2). In this quote, she addresses the people at the convention in a very friendly manner, implying that they share a close bond with her. While a lot of the viewers may not necessarily have anything in common with her besides being a democrat,
Obesity in children is a growing crisis in our society. It has become an alarming concern for both communities and health care organizations. There are a number of ways to improve eating habits and encourage healthier choices. Making healthier foods accessible in groceries stores is one example. Our First Lady, Michelle Obama used the following quote during her speech in Chicago to call attention to the lack of healthy food stores in some communities in Chicago. She proclaims that it is a community matter and every one must be involve to make changes. Without change in the community individuals will not have opportunities to make healthier food choice .
I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton’s Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. “(Barack Obama pg.2). This is important, because it shows that Obama is able to relate to both black and white people. This in return gives reassurance to the readers that Obama would be fair and understands both of their perspective. Barack Obama starts to give his own experience of racism and stereotypes, Obama expresses “At various states in the campaign, some commentators have deemed me either “too black” or “not black enough”. We saw racial tensions bubble to the surface during the week before the South Carolina primary” (Barack Obama pg.2). Barack Obama being able to share his own experience makes his speech
Barack Hussein Obama also struggled and suffered a lot during his life, but he ended up as the 44th President of The United States of American. He achieved his American Dream, and in his situation it was slightly impossible. Barack Hussein Obama comes from a Muslim family, and he is also black, and his dad is from Kenya, considering the racism in the world today, and the fact that he’s not fully American, achieving what he achieved was almost impossible. Obama showed how America is free and anyone can achieve their American Dream there.
Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Barbadian parents. When she was three years old, Shirley was sent to live with her grandmother on a farm in Barbados, a former British colony in the West Indies. She received much of her primary education in the Barbadian school Her ideals were perfect for the times. In the mid-1960s the civil rights movement was in full swing.
Campaigns often show the most significant change in a nation’s lifestyle as a whole. Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” Campaign is a perfect example of a campaign that can change the nation, even if it wasn’t as much as they had in mind. Michelle’s “Let’s Move” Campaign gave an increased amount of access to easier view the true amounts of ingredients in food and beverages on labels. It also encouraged kids to move for a mere 60 minutes everyday to increase their daily activity levels and reduce obesity. They also encouraged a healthy diet through the new, easy-to-read “My Plate” diagram, recommending how much to eat of which foods and what to avoid in your daily diet. This campaign slightly lowered obesity rates in a positive way, which is what matters most. People were positively encouraged to lose weight and were not body-shamed at any point from this campaign. Many other campaigns such as the “Eat Fresh” Campaign from Subway and “New Year, New You” Campaigns from local fitness centers such as the YMCA, Snap Fitness, and Anytime Fitness all also encourage a healthy lifestyle in a positive manner. In any campaign, any amount of “forward motion” in the goal of the campaign (decreased obesity rates and a healthier world) is good
Nonetheless, we spend billions of dollars on health care, treating obesity conditions rather than actually treating obesity. In Michelle Obama remarks to the NAACP National Convention (2010) she proposes a program called “Let’s Move” a program to encourage and educate for better eating, one of her plans is to “get more kids to participate in daily physical education classes” (Graff 426). If this proposal becomes true it would help children understand their bodies and the benefits of taking care of it. Besides, if we leave them to exercise at school they may love it and practice it during their leisure time. Mrs. Obama continues this proposal by stating that “all families [should] have access to fresh, affordable food in their residential districts where they exist” (Graff 427). In urban communities you rarely see a Food4Less, Smart&Final, Ralph, Trader Joes, or even a Fresh&Easy; yet there are Fast-Food companies on every corner. “Drive down any thoroughfare in America, and I guarantee you’ll see one of our country’s more than 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants. Now, drive back up the block and try to find someplace to buy a grapefruit” (Zinczenko 392). If there is an increase in Super Markets, there will be more home cook meals and eating of fruits and
When she said like me she meant a young man from the ghetto of Detroit, Michigan, my freshman year I left Detroit public shoes to go to schools in the suburbs to better my education, get away from all the violence, and to play basketball. Her comments left me flabbergasted because how dare she look at me and judge me by the color of my skin and because of where I was from. She didn’t know me, she didn’t know what I had to go through to get where I was at, she didn’t know how hard I worked and how hard I prayed every night to get out of Detroit and not be another victim of the system that society has craved for so many blacks got into. The system or never doing anything positive with your life, drugs, jail, and never amounting to anything. It wasn’t until later that I realized she tried to surpress me,kill my dignity, and my dreams because she feared the greatness that I have inside of me. They as in some of the teachers and parents wrote a 20 page paper about how they didn’t want me and my 5 other friends to attend the school, how they feared we would pollute the other student’s mind in a negative way, and how we aren’t good for anything but basketball. I stayed and face the adversity and it made me stronger mentally and more open to the racism that was still being put into place in the United
Not only has she graduated from two exceptional Ivy League colleges (Princeton and Harvard), she is also a lawyer. She was raised on the South Side of Chicago, had opportunities to study at prestigious universities, returned to her hometown, married, and raised two beautiful daughters. Unlike Barack, Michelle has two black parents and a black sibling, and she comes from a city readily associated with black life and politics. She even has a family tree that traces back to American slavery. Observers comfortably frame Michelle Obama as angry Sapphire figure, but how is that possible when she is one out of the few mothers who hold degrees from the most reputable schools around the world. Again, her critique was taken as evidence of her ideational anger. Michelle Obama is the most known example of an African American woman who has worked hard to become who she is today and is probably the most idealistic perfect woman. Still the success and difficulty she has experienced in gaining accurate recognition is emblematic, if not typical, of black women’s citizenship struggles. She is still only seen as the stereotypical black woman in the eyes of supremacist even though she has out succeeded the majority of people today. One could assume that Michelle Obama is someone who could be looked to as faultless representation of how black women can achieve and obtain such incredible power. Unfortunately, not even the first lady is respected even with her credentials. For example. there were attempts to frame her with the common trope of hypersexuality. In the heat of the general election fight, Fox News referred to her as “Barack’s baby mama”. Instead she fights strong against these over rationalized comments because she knows she is better than what they say. If Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States, is not recognized as credible, than it is clear that no black woman will ever be
Barack Hussein Obama II was born in 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the son of Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. His mother a white American citizen from Kansas and his father a black African foreign student studying in Hawaii. Barack Sr left Hawaii to continue his work in his hometown in Africa. For some years, Barack Obama lived with his mother and stepfather in Indonesia; it was from here that he went back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents when his mother felt Barack wasn’t getting the best education. Barack Obama left Hawaii to further his education, studying in both California and New York City. In 1989, Barack Obama began working at a Chicago law firm when he first met Michelle. Michelle, a Princeton University and Harvard Law School graduate who was Barack boss. “First Lady Michelle LaVaugh married Barack Hussien Obama on October 3rd, 1992” (When did First Lady…) after dating for over four years. Whilst living in Chicago, the Obama’s extended their family with the birth of their first daughter in 1998, and in 2001 Michelle gave birth to another daughter.
Introducing Michelle Rhee battle over education reform in Washington, D.C’s public schools. According to, the Houston Public Media Michelle Rhee remains one of the most notorious education reformers in the nation. In Washington, Rhee’s direct style helped turn around a struggling district, but her decision to close schools and fire hundreds of teachers and principals also generated criticism. In according with New week, Michelle Rhee showed that she was serious about reform the schools, by firing more that than a hundred non-union central office workers, including administrators, and thirty six principals for not educating the students in the public school. Therefore, the three leadership traits in which Michelle Rhee scores high was to drive
After his 1991 graduation from Harvard Law School, Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.
Success is within the mind of the individual. A large portion of ones life is spent working to become successful. People are told throughout childhood to work hard so they can grow up and make lots of money. But success takes many different forms. Different people have different interpretations of what success means to them. For some, success is measured by social status and wealth; for others success is determined only by the amount of happiness one feels.
