Many people illegally travel to another place because they are desperately looking for better opportunities, running away from poverty, wars or violence the United States is the one country that can offer those opportunities to come true and allow dreams to these immigrants from all over the world than any other country. The United States Congress needs to act on the Illegal Immigration Bill as soon as possible. For instance Mexico, unfortunately, has a poor economy with a high population and the country is still engaged in a war with various Mexican drug cartels which kills more than 80,000 people every year(Jay). Therefore, United States being one of the most successful countries attracts many of these illegal immigrants. It provides freedom …show more content…
As Garcia points out in his article “Why 'illegal immigrant ' is a slur”, the term ‘illegal immigrant’ was first used by the British to describe Jews fleeing from Nazi Germany in 1939. Garcia also quotes Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner, “No human being is illegal.” Garcia shows in his article that Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote for the majority on a case about using the terms ‘illegal immigrant’, ‘illegal alien’, or ‘illegal’, was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and three other justices in this case. In the case SB 1070, a case regarding Arizona’s immigration reform and enforcement bill, the majority ruled that in general, a removable alien is not considered a criminal, which the term ‘illegal’ implies. They also stated that seeking out or engaging in unauthorized employment is not a crime(Garcia). For this reason, I will be referring to this group of people as undocumented …show more content…
Of those 40 million, 11 million immigrants are not authorized to be in the country (Kirkwood). The exact number of illegal immigrants is unknown due to their lack of documents. Out of the 11 million 59% of the undocumented immigrants come from Mexico, 15% from Central and South America, 10% from Asia and the rest come from other parts of the world (Demographics). This might be surprising because when people hear the word “immigrant” or something that has to do with immigration people jump to conclusion and they believe it has to do with Mexicans or any Latino. This is not true people from all over the world come to United States to have a better life. Even though Mexicans do makeup for most of the undocumented immigrants in the United States they are not the only ones who are here illegally.
Illegal immigration is when a foreigner has entered a country unlawfully or without the country 's permission. In recent news, there has been quite the debate over whether or not there should be amnesty or citizenship offered to some or all of the undocumented immigrants in America. It has also been a hot topic during election because of the Latino vote. Many believe that the Latino vote is important so most Latinos pay attention to what a candidate is willing to do to help the Latino
In the U. S today, the approximated population of undocumented immigrants stands at averagely 11 million. Therefore, this has created a hot debate in Congress about the action to take over the undocumented immigrants. Those opposed to illegal immigrants suggest that, their stay in the United States effects U.S citizens on the job market negatively . In addition, illegal immigrants are viewed in certain quarters as takers in the sense that illegal immigrants benefit more from public resources than the american-born citizens of the U.S. However, the reality is that immigrants contribute positively to the U.S economy and pay significantly into the system compared to what they send back home. In addition, the contributions associated with undocumented immigrants involve sustaining the solvency of the SSTF (Social Security Trust Fund). In this sense, the use of cost benefit analysis by those supporting immigration restrictions are unfounded and do not reflect the facts on the ground (Nadadur 1037). The opponents of undocumented immigrants believe that having more undocumented immigrants in the U.S is costly; however, there are no solid reasons to prove that undocumented immigrants are a burden to the treasury. Instead, the undocumented immigrants play an important role in boosting the economy and in particular by taking up jobs those citizens perceive as demeaning because the money they earn goes back to the economy through taxes resulting from consumer spending when they send money back home.
The policies implemented by the United States to strengthen the border and enforce immigration policies have led to the abuse and profiling of undocumented immigrants. Undocumented immigrants live in constant fear of deportation and are subjected to multiple human rights violations as they are abused, exploited and discriminated against. Immigrants are racialized and stereotyped. The US government has passed laws that discriminate against undocumented immigrants, making it harder for them to live and survive in America. These laws are due to the perception that undocumented immigrants are a burden on the US economy, but on the contrary undocumented immigrants provide an economic benefit to the US, and due to the benefit they provide society
During the 1900’s through 1950’s the United States experienced an influx of immigrants coming in from Mexico seeking employment opportunities, as many of them wanted to avoid the Mexican Revolution occurring from 1910 to 1920. Methods for arriving in the United States varied for each individual’s preference of the destination, but the means of transportation had been constant throughout. These methods of transportation consisted of contractors seeking unskilled workers willing to partake in hard labor in steel, railroad, or agriculture companies. Contractors traveled to towns close to Mexico’s boarder such as Laredo or El Paso seeking Mexicans citizens for labors. In some instances, immigrants traveled on their own will based on the advice
One of the most recent outbreaks in America, is illegal immigration. An illegal immigrant is a foreigner who enters the U.S. without an entry or immigrant visa, especially a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson; a foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country's authorization.(dictionary.com). The effect from illegal immigration impacts America directly dealing with: environmental ordinance, social and political concepts, and economic pursuits. "Illegal immigration generates insecurity about America’s borders, carries economic and fiscal costs, and risks the creation of an isolated underclass. The prevalence
The United States of America, being a country founded by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Matt O’Brien stated in his article “The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007.”(Para, 2).

From the beginning of the United States, immigrants have always played an integral role. The nation itself was built on immigration, whether to escape persecution or war; however, the United States, as it progressed has had instances where immigrant groups have had issues assimilating into society whether due to the political wave running through the nation or from an economic depression. One group, that has been experiencing this difficulty assimilating into society has been Mexicans who have, since the beginning of the 1960’s, have been coming over in droves to escape the poverty, corruption, and drugs that run rampant in Mexico. So, although the United States was established on immigration, the United States has had an issue with the incoming
It is my opinion that illegal immigration has become one of the scourges of today’s society in America. According to many sources, such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform, illegal immigration is actually a crime. In my view, anyone who participates in the crime of hoarding an illegal immigrant should be fined or even imprisoned for a year or more, with multiple offenses. Not only do these people overstay their welcome, but they crowd our classrooms and steal our jobs. Unless an individual from the Mexico border has been granted citizenship and licensed to live in America, then they shouldn’t bother to face the consequences should they be caught. I firmly believe that illegal immigrants should not be allowed to stay in the United
A topic crucial to the world today is illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is when people live in a country without permission from the government, nor have any legal documentation. As more and more illegal immigrants enter the United States, it either upsets some people, or others feel like they should just grant them ability to pursue life, liberty, and happiness because that is what the Constitution says. Some people feel that illegal immigrants should be protected by the same rights and laws as American citizens. On the other hand, many people believe that this is a horrible mistake. They feel that the rights of citizenship should be earned and not extended to people who haven broken the law just by being in the United States.
Immigration has played a huge role throughout the United States history and is an extremely controversial topic that you pretty much hear of every day. Illegal immigrants are thought to be, nowadays, as criminals doing only what's worse for the
What really is an illegal immigrant? It is defined as “an alien (non-citizen) who has entered a country without government authorization or remained beyond the expiration date of a visa”.
The travel that illegal immigrants have to come to the United States is as hard as their life back home, but as soon as they settle down, their quality of life will start to improve. Not only do immigrants come here for a better life, but they also happen to improve the economy in U.S. upon crossing
One of the main reasons for immigration is economic reasons. Life in poverty and unhappiness force people to search a better life. Continuously the economic distance between the developed countries and the third world countries are increasing year by year. As a result, people from underdeveloped and developing countries come to industrialized countries in order to have better earnings, better job opportunities and better education for their children. The United States has been the world's largest national economy since the 1920s (CNN Money). In 2013, the GDP of USA was $16. 2 trillion (CNN Money). That is why people from the underdeveloped and developing countries are moving in USA; to change their economic condition. Moreover, there is a strong demand for skilled workers in U.S. such as engineers, doctors, and other professionals. The paying scale for these professionals in USA is better than in other developed countries. Thus, people have moved, are moving, and are trying to move in USA.
How this many undocumented immigrants live here is a little hazy because of our rigorous laws. There are two different types of illegal immigrants and knowing these two distinctively different types of illegal immigrants is of great importance. The first, are immigrants that travel to our country legally with a visa or green card but stay as their visas become expired. The other illegal immigrant is when a person illegally trespasses our border without asking for permission from the government and lives here. The first type of Immigrants are much easier to track and incarcerate because of the fact that the government already knows that they are in the country. However, the second type of illegal immigrant is much more difficult to find because the government is unaware of their
Illegal Immigration can occur for various reasons but one of the main causes over years has been civil wars which made people cross borders of other countries. One more factor can be poverty where people migrate from other countries legally or illegally to higher paid jobs, better living conditions and one of the main examples of these are thousands of people who apply for H1-B (highly skilled workers) every year to legally work for a company in America. Another factor could be persecution in their own country for person’s wrong doing in religious or political beliefs and fleeing to adjacent country to take sanctuary. According to Anderson, immigrants come to America from neighboring countries especially Mexico to benefit fr...
