What is family? Each person defines family according to what family means to him/her. The concept of family means various things to different people, yet the meaning of the word can bring different emotions to the person who hears it. But no one is born into this life alone. Everyone has known the bond of family, at least at birth, and for many it is a bond that can last life long time. Traditionally one can define family as a group of people related by blood. It is the most precious bond of all. For a child growing up fifty years ago in the west, family dynamic was defined by the people he/she grew up with who were related to by blood who provided love, care, and affection. For the Middle Eastern people, however, the definition …show more content…
Family is considered as the smallest organization which an individual can identify. However, the wider perspective of the family comprises of those people who find themselves linked up by factors other than belonging to the same lineage. Such kind of family is different from the normal or previously defined ones. These types of associations include a group of people bonded by friendship, orphans who are in care of foster parents, guardians; it can even be an adult model to which the person identifies. In such cases, people directly become a …show more content…
Previously the father’s role was to work and earn money as the primary source of support for the family, while mothers took care of the family by managing the household. The father teaches his children courage and self-confidence while the mother carries over the sense of tenderness to them. Both of them are role models for their children. The male figure, which is the father, is very important in the girl’s life because the good relationship between the father and the daughter will result in being the girl confident and she will start to trust in men and to choose the right person to be her future husband. But the characteristics of individual family members have changed across generations over the past years. Now, mothers are the only or supporting provider for the family. On the other hand, many fathers choose to stay home and take care of the children. Although families all around the world underwent unprecedented modifications that changed the form of nations, there are still traditional family patterns; father, mother, and children. Such huge changes in the structure of the family, immigration, and work have transformed the daily lives of children and their way of living. There are major inferences for the living arrangements of children because of the changing family dynamics. This means that children are not receiving the attention they need from the
Family, the word itself brings images of love, comfort, and peace in mind. The foundation of the family is based on structure, care, and dependence. It is a combination of individuals striving to understand and love one another unconditionally. Sharing the same blood is no longer a requirement to be considered a family. In fact, the definition of family is evolving like never before. With most marriages ending in divorce, the majority of children will be reared in "nontraditional" families ( single parent, step-parent, etc.). It seems that now the only thing you need in order to be a functional family is love and trust, which can be found anywhere from a close friend to a pet.
Family as defined by Webster’s College Dictionary can be one of many different people. Family can be your parents, spouse, children, brother, sister, grandmother, uncle, any blood relative, or even people who are not blood related that share that common bond (Webster 475). My definition of family is similar to Webster’s, but I feel that there is more to it than just being a blood relative or close friend. A person’s actions, beliefs, and morals play a major role in deciding who makes it into that “family” group. Family becomes more of an idea or feeling, like love or hate, than just who a person is or where they fall in your family tree. There have been people that I have considered closer than family just by their actions, even though they were nowhere near related to me. Fortunately, I have not had any blood relation family members make me wish they were not in my “family” (maybe my older sister when we were younger, but that doesn’t count). While reading from Children and Families in our text, I came across many readings that I feel were inspired in many different ways by what the author believed was “family.” There were two readings that jumped out at me and reminded me of my view of how a family should be in their interactions with each other. They were the short story “Flight” by Doris Lessing and the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes. There was also one writing that I read that went against my idea of family and made me happy that this wasn’t the way that my family acted as I grew up, that was “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid. And while some authors lean their writing one direction or another, Adrienn...

How can a simple six letter word be so complicated to define? Family is a single word that is open to many interpretations depending on the individual. Economies, cultures, and backgrounds can further differentiate what one’s perception of a family is. For many people, including me, a family is so much more. It is the amount of commitment, cohesiveness, and importance

There are many types of family that exists in today’s society, each important to the upbringing of any children of which may be apart of it. Whether due to economic changes, cultural values, the role of caregiver goes beyond mother and father (Kurrien & Dawn Vo, 2004). The family unit is as diverse as the societies they each represent. This sometimes can manifest traditional roles of doting mothers and providing fathers into a home with two sets of parents (Kurrien & Dawn Vo, 2004). Therefore, the involvement and importance of the extended family: grandparents and other family members such as aunts and uncles play a significant role in both its economic and social function.
