Gatsby represents the American Dream by the way that he is the only person in the novel who is really a self-made man and he also did not get his money legally. He made most of it bootlegging. So, sadly it seems that Fitzgerald is trying to say that the American dream is not attainable through legitimate means and motives. You have to beat the system to have money as Fitzgerald thinks. Also, since he is from new money, he is definatly not accepted into the upper echelons of society. His socialite, or old money friends only hang out with him when he is throwing his huge, lavish parties. When he is ruined at the end of the novel, no one cares about him. No one even comes to his funeral. It seems that even if one does make the money necessary to realize The American Dream you still can’t have everything, because at some point it will just get taken away like Jay Gatsby money would have been taken away because all the money he earned was from bootleggin and that money is illegal. ...o be linked with Gatsby. Tom and Daisy did not come because they had left town to avoid any investigation into Myrtle’s death and Gatsby's death. Just so you didnt forget Daisy was the one who drove the car that killed Myrtle. The hundreds and hundreds of people who came to Gatsby's parties did not come because they had no relationship with Gatsby, they only came to his house to eat his food, drink his liquor, and have a good time. They were only using him because he had money and his parties were fun no one actually knew him. Gatsby spent the entire novel struggling to attain an American Dream and that was really an illusion, he was also trying to use money to buy things that really aren't for sale, and those struggles essentially lead to his death , with no one but Nick to care. His sole friend, and the only one who never cared about Gatsby's money or social status.
