It all begun when I was in high school. An organization called ‘Hoops for heart’ visited my school and asked for help. They presented a heartbreaking case of a young boy called Thanh who was suffering from a serious heart disease. He was in desperate need of surgery that cost $2,000, an amount his family could never afford. At the time of the visit, I was one the executives of the High School Student Representative Council. Other executives and I were confident in raising the $2,000. However, none of our fundraising activities seemed to get traction. When we were feeling our lowest, our headmaster gave us some constructive criticism. He stated that this was the consequence of a lack of communication. It was the first time I heard the term, Public Relations. I was further exposed to the concept as well as the practice of Public Relations through my avid participation in the Model United Nations (MUN), where I got to learn more about the power of communication. From there, my interest in public relations grew. My interest turned into my passion, which make choosing a program in University easy; I decided to major in communications upon entering university. During my first two years of undergraduate study, I studied a wide variety of subjects such as journalism, advertising and most importantly, public relations. Initially, I found my public relations course to be mysterious. It was challenging and stressful, but it was also never boring. Taking public relations only strengthened my desire to major in it, and the realization that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Being the optimistic and energetic extrovert, I am, I enjoyed participating in various extracurricular clubs and activities related to public relat... ... middle of paper ... ... a marketer and consumer, making it a strong force in the public relations arena. Hence, I hope to learn the more from them. I am young and inexperienced. I am a blank paper. Some may think I am not qualified enough. Nonetheless, think reversely. This feature can mean that I can turn into a talented student of the University of South Carolina. I have the fervor to learn and experience more about this dynamic and fast-paced field.The famous writer, Malcolm Gladwell said, to be a world-wide known expert, one should devote more than 10,000 hours. I will be exploring the answers to my questions at University of Florida through the endless process of learning and experimenting. I revel at the opportunity of having University of Florida be the place where I can spend my next 10,000 hours to prepare my début as a competent public relations practitioner and researcher.
