I made a question regarding each stage as it applied to the child’s age. As a result of the interviews with the two different families, I concluded that their responses supported Erikson’s developmental stages. I started with Erikson’s first stage of development “ Trust vs. Mistrust (infants 0 to 1 year old)”. This is the stage were infants ask the question: Is the world a trustworthy place? During this stage, infants learn to know on whom they can rely on and based on the responses of these two families, their child most likely learned trust because the parents seem to know how to meet their child’s needs. Followed by the second stage “Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt (Toddlers 2 to 3 years)”. In this stage children learn to become independent, they do things on their own rather than relaying on someone else. For the most part the two children of these particular families developed autonomy. Parents said they were patients about their child’s development, but parent 1 noted that she did push her child a little if she knew her child was could do more sooner. Regarding the third stage “Initiative vs. Guilt (Preschool, 3 to 6 years)” the children of these two families most likely to experience guilt after initiating something they knew if was not necessarily good for them. Parents from both families demonstrated to have a demanding reaction towards their child in these situations. The fourth stage “Industry (competence) vs. Inferiority” only applied to one the first family. The child of this family showed more signs of industry. Because of her mother’s reaction towards her actions, it was probably easier for the child to answer the main question in this stage: How can I be good? An example when an adult was scaffolding an infant during the time I was observing Lab 1 would be when George of 1 year and 3 months was wobbly walking and exploring his surroundings and worryingly one of the instructors said “no, no” and instead he walked towards another designated play era and uncertain he looked back and made eye contact with the same instructor. In Erik Erikson’s theory he explains that in every stage, a positive or a negative attitude is developed within an individual. During our developing stages we are either successful or we fail. Each stage will come to us whether or not we’re ready for them or not. You can think of the stages as learning stages where crisis occur .Only if we have learned from the previous crisis we are successful. You cannot avoid 1 stage and move to a next stage because of the developing process. The outcome of our lives depends on the way we chose to progress throughout each stage in life. However, I think the most challenging stage is Puberty. In this stage children’s emotions are all over the place. They are trying to discover who they are and sometimes this means they have a different plan than what their parents want. They have more problems with authority figures than any other age group which leads to causing parents grief from reasons like car accidents, arrests, drinking and driving, pregnancy, bullying, arguing, and laziness. I think all parents should be aware of counseling and the benefits from it. It is okay to need help in raising children. Parents need to know that they are going to get angry with their children at times and that it is okay as long as they deal with their children in acceptable ways. The woman given in this case study is not doing well. It is needless to say that she probably didn’t think that her life would end up this way. A woman of her age and a mother of two going through a divorce is always a stressful and complicated time. To make matters worse, this crisis in her life corresponds perfectly with a crisis in her faith life. My initial guess is that these two crises are not individual events, but rather that they are interrelated on a fundamental level. Understanding what makes infants and young children turn into good people is important. Using psychology we can test and find what makes a baby turn out better in the long run. Also, psychologists understand that a baby that may be behind or ahead of the average baby is because of that babies environment and their genes. In 1963, psychoanalyst Erik Erikson developed one of the most comprehensive theories of social development. The theory centers around eight stages of psychological development. One of the stages, autonomy versus shame and doubt, occurs between the ages of one and a half and three years old. In this stage toddlers develop independence if freedom and exploration are encouraged. Autonomy itself means having control over oneself. "At any given moment, our behavior, including this sense [autonomy], is influenced by the outer environment and our inner psychological state" (Restak 268). If they are overly restricted and protected they develop shame. "Shame is the estrangement of being exposed and conscious of being looked at disapprovingly, of wishing to 'bury one's face' or 'sink into the ground.'" (Blake 115). This stage is where a toddler/ child learns to be self-sufficient in different activities such as walking, eating, talking etc. or to think uncertainty of themselves (Christensen & Kockrow, 2011). As a premature infant there can be some delays in some of these area causing the child to have lack of independence. In Laurie’s case she had mixture of autonomy vs. shame and doubt. This can be seen due being premature infant. When Laurie was released from the hospital, she had to be on a heart monitor which cause her to have delays in walking, but on the other hand, she was talking and learn how to use her hands to feed herself. After the heart monitor was removed Laurie gain freedom and started to walk and explore her surroundings more. So she was showing autonomy. Also, in this time period from infant to toddler there are many doctor appointments to keep an eye on the child development and growth this is also very important with premature infants. Looking at Laurie’s case she born very small weighing only 3lbs and 11ozs she was able to catch up eventually to the norm for her age. These were all good signs in her development. Growing strong and being a miracle baby as the doctors called her she was developing well. She was able have a secure attachment with her parents. The last stage of Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development, which I have no personal experience with, is the crisis between integrity and despair. Swartwood (2014, p. 86) states that at this stage individuals “struggle [with] the acceptance of impending death and the fact that our lives are primarily historical, rather than in the future.” When the elderly look back on their lives and realize that they lived their life with purpose, they are filled with a sense of integrity. No matter who you are I believe that everyone will go through stages in their life that will get them to where they are on today. I am a person who has a very interesting story; this is the first time it will be told in full. We were asked to use Erik Erikson’s theory of development as a guideline to telling the story of our lives. At first I was very nervous; however, I soon realized that this would be a fun task. Erik Erikson has eight stages of Development (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman). I will be walking you though my life using each one of his stages drawing out the map of my life. Within my life I have had some very interesting encounters. I have been through foster care, abuse, rape, molestation, starvation, adoption, depression, and success. Although my life may not be perfect, I believe that I have overcome these battles and become the person that I am on today.
