What exactly does it mean to work in the field of epidemiology and biostatistics? To put it simply, it is the basic science of public health. Epidemiology is about the understanding of disease development and the methods used to uncover the etiology, progression, and treatment of the disease. Information (data) is collected to investigate a question and the methods and tools of biostatistics are used to analyze the data to aid decision making (Johns Hopkins 2008). Biostatistics is the application of statistics to problems in the biological sciences, health, and medicine. The steps of methods used in this profession are as follows: address a public health question (this includes generating a hypothesis), conduct a study (there are many different kinds of studies that could be useful depending on the question being asked), collect data, describe the observations and data, assess the strength of evidence for/against a hypothesis; evaluate the data, and …show more content…
Epidemiological education extends to a young professional’s postgraduate work-life in the form of multi-year fellowships. These fellowships act as the preliminary work experience (under the guidance of seasoned mentors), and as the final bridge from a world that is largely academic to one that is practical. Unlike other careers in health, epidemiology does not require certification. However, for those who wish to further their education and better their chances of employment, there are two boards that offer certification exams: The Certification Board for Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC), and the Association for Professional in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). Some epidemiologists, such as those in clinical and academic roles, may also receive certification and licensing by organizations like the American Medical Association (AMA) (publichealth.org
Public health is a vast field that encompasses many issues. Generally speaking, it deals with the safety and protection of people in a society as well as education
study I am going to go into detail about the epidemiology, discuss the signs and
What is scoliosis? Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder that causes the back to curve sideways like and “S” or a “C” and cause the body to lean to one side. Scoliosis can eventually if not looked into and not treated colid with your bodily organs like your heart, lungs, and kidneys. This can cause you to slump down into a hump and cause it hard to breath and do physical activity.
The merits of certifications in the health care field is a necessity. Certifications in the clinical laboratory aids with picking qualified candidates to handle certain conditions. A certification is a process that acknowledges, whether you have the competency with meeting predetermined standards in a specialized field. Many organizations determine the standards for certification in the healthcare field. MLT certifications standards are set and determined by a board called, American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP). This board is the officiator of determining board standards throughout the country. Gaining the credentials from this board, declares that you meet the competency and the standards in the clinical laboratory. The only set
“Epidemiology is the study of distributing in determinants of disease and disability and populations” (Mausner & Bahn 1974). It’s a basic science of the public’s health and is a measured scientific control that relies heavily on data and study design. Those who study epidemiology focus on specific population and how disabilities and disease affect them. Epidemiological methods have been applied to infectious disease outbreak investigations, but also to studies of longer-term chronic disease investigations. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System is the largest telephone survey in the world. It’s used to determine the commandments of many health risk behaviors among populations. Surveys were developed and conducted to mon...
This was followed by one year practical clinical training leading to a registered medical practitioner license in Pakistan. After acquiring my Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany I started my professional career in Germany. I have worked for more than 6 years in the field of primary research (clinical research) and secondary research (systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials) in Germany. Furthermore, I was able to acquire public health research knowledge through MPH study and master’s thesis research. I was one of the best students during the MPH study at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences,
The Center of Disease Control and Prevention performs studies to acquire information about the health and wellness of the general public. Some of these studies include simple censuses that ask people about preexisting conditions, height, weight, age, and their family history and health. They also look to see how certain diseases affect a person’s body and how they can be dealt with. For example, the Center of Disease Control and Prevention would conduct studies of people in different age groups and family history hat already have heart disease. They then look to see if the cause of heart disease in the different age groups is influenced by any particular factors. They have found that the risk of heart disease is increased if a person has a genetic history of heart disease caused by hypercholesterolemia and by ingesting high fat foods, low exercise, and ingesting harmful products like alcohol or tobacco. The main fields that the CDC focuses these studies upon are Diseases and Conditions, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Environmental Health, Life Stages and Populations, Healthy Living, ...
...in the fields of both science and medicine, future epidemics of any disease can be handled better. When a lethal disease begins to rampage a population, research on similar epidemics can help the world contain, cure, and prevent the disease to protect the world and its population.
...forming bench research at Barry University and Weill Cornell Medical College in the Traveler’s Research Fellowship, I have been exposed to the side of medicine where scientists work every day to find cures for diseases and save lives. Experiencing different aspects of medicine has made me a more competent individual to thrive in this field and has deepened my interest and passion to pursue medicine as a career.I believe that those who fight with so little against so much truly need others to help them in their struggle. Being a physician is not only becoming a successful professional. I will work hard to bring about necessary changes to end social disparities, so that more groups in society receive the best healthcare. By making a difference in their lives, I will receive rewarding experiences that are worth all the hard work and sacrifice my chosen career requires.
Even though we have done important things for the treatment, control and prevention of infectious diseases, there are still emerging infectious diseases that are a big problem. One such problem is the relationship between ecology and epidemiology. Ecology is the study of the economy of nature, while epidemiology is the study of the distribution of disease, or other health-related conditions and events in human or animal populations, in order to identify health problems and possible causes. Both of these help to collect data from the field and try to understand how certain organisms survive in their
In an effort to analyze the natural history of a disease, an epidemiological triangle is used. An epidemiological triangle is comprised of a susceptible host or individual, environment, and a causative agent. The host tends to have low immunity, poor nutrition, and a concurrent disease. The host tends to have poor
In some way, public health is seen as a modern philosophical and ideological perspective based on ‘equity’ and aimed to determine inequitable in society. It seen as a ‘science’ and ‘art’ in the sense that it deals with the cause of disease, treatment of illness as well as it involves laboratory experiments, intervention and promoting of health of the population. Winslow (1920, p. 23) defined public health as ‘the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting physical health and efficiency through organised community efforts for the sanitation of the environment, the control community infections, the education of the individual in principles of personal hygiene, the organisation of medical and nursing service for early diagnosis and preventive treatment of disease, and the development of social machinery which will ensure to every individual in the community a standard of living adequate for the maintenance of health. On the other hand, it is ‘the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organised effort of society’ (Acheson, 1998; in Cowley S, 2002, p. 261).
...dressing only small part of a greater picture. Though not explicitly stated, a combination of vertical and horizontal programming should be the focus of future public health programs. That is, instead of focusing on only one disease, many health issues should be acknowledged and addressed but yet still given priority for resource allocation. Of course some public health issues are more important than others, but we, as future public health practitioners, cannot stop looking at smaller issues just because they are perceived as less important; all public health issues are important. When the health of communities suffers in any way, the future suffers, and we must be the ones to reduce as much suffering as possible.
Epidemiology research, understanding of study design and methods, hypothesis formation, and writing a scientific poster help me develop pertinent research skills to success in a future in biomedical science. I aim to earn a Ph.D. in biomedical science and continue in health science that will positively impact the population. I believe that public health can fit together with biomedical science to find insight to molecular mechanisms and complex understanding of what diseases are seen in research fields like epidemiology. I am passionate about public health and epidemiology foci of nutrition so working on a project to prevent and dec...
Frieden establishes the fundamentals of success. These components that are innovation, communication, technical package, management, and political commitment create a web for Public Health. By utilizing this over everyday lives. These programs can target anything from micro issue to epidemics. This educational tool focuses on building a system that challenges normative ideas and helps identify new strategies. This ultimately relates in a creating an ecosystem of new ground rules that every Public Health official should use. Dr. Frieden did a great job on explaining what is next in educating and
