This paper includes a review of a few scientific articles to determine what personal care products present an environmental health concern and how this pertains to humans as well as our ecosystem. I will review some ingredients found within personal care products which have been gaining significant attention because of the proposed correlation to the development of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the number one killer among all cancer caused deaths for women so it is important – as a female, daughter and niece of two breast cancer survivors– to minimize environmental exposures to any contributing factors to anything that increases the chances of developing breast cancer (Darbre, 2006, p.122). It is also important to note that not only females are at risk, as breast cancer can develop in males as well (Darbre, 2006, p.122). Cosmetics and personal care products will be used interchangeably throughout this essay to cover products used by consumers which may be of concern. Chemicals included in this essay do not cover all the chemicals that are commonly associated with breast cancer development. Problems with regulations, manufacturing and consumer product use will be covered to include chemicals such as parabens, triclosan, UV filters, phthalates and fragrances with suggestions on how to reduce risk of exposures to these chemicals and possible solutions to increase prevention of human and environmental damage.
