Personal Reflection of ENGR 4501; Engineering Case Studies
In our course, engineering case studies, we primarily focused on study of great achievements and historic failures in engineering, with focus on ethical issues and societal impacts. This is important because as a profession we the engineers are expected to adhere the welfare of the society we are supporting and improving. In any profession, we are expected to perform honestly with the utmost respect to every individual’s well-being. In engineering this is especially important because our profession has major economic, environmental, cultural, and political impact. If we do not follow certain professionalism within our career how can we be of any use to our society? It is important to understand the ethical conduct as an engineer and this course evaluate this principle to better ourselves.
Although we discuss about many engineering cases focusing on disaster not all topics were necessarily this case. Engineering case topic the Grand Canyon Skywalk is one example. This case studies showcased the technical achievement of combined efforts of both geologist …show more content…

For example, very early on the semester specifically on January 13th, 2015 we discussed about the engineering achievement of the Brooklyn Bridge. For the Brooklyn Bride, I said that “Caisson Disease or decompression sickness was caused by the construction of the bridge. However, caisson is a watertight retaining structure necessary to build the bridge at the time.” This in my opinion was the negative effect of the engineering case we focused on during that day. However, I have also wrote that “Although the Brooklyn Bridge caused decompression sickness during its construction it is still considered as one of the greatest engineering achievement at the time. Till this day the bridge exist and it is one of the country’s most known national icon located in New York
