As a student enrolled in English 112, I was expected to improve in my writing process, critical thinking, rhetoric, and research. Personally, my rhetoric use and critical thinking have been stretched the most. Concerning my critical thinking, I have never been required to use so many neurons to come up with and prove my own argument. Yes, I have written on simple, prewritten argumentative examples like, “Should students wear school uniforms?”. However, I have never had to sit, pause, and just think about how to argue an author’s motive in a piece of literature. This class has also required me to stay keen on rhetorical skills. I changed my argument three times before coming to write about forgiveness. In comparison with the expository piece, the literary analysis used complex vocabulary, which was my goal, and better transitions. In the expository paper, transitions were choppy because I failed to include concluding sentences at the ends of my paragraphs.
Next, I included an assignment from my IB Music course. I was required to compare two distinct musical cultures. I included this paper to show how the information I gained helped me outside of English 112. The research, citation, and persuasive writing skills I learned in English
112 greatly helped me to write this paper. My knowledge on the writing process helped me breeze through the assignment and stay focused on my topic.
My final assignment was the multi-genre paper on Christian denominations. Choosing and writing this topic to argue was fun because it has a lot personal value to me. Writing this assignment was freeing; for the first time, I was able to use my imagination completely on a writing assignment.
