My stance on this issue is that; yes, English should be the official language of the United States. My reason for my stance is that when citizens of another Country enter into The United States, English is a mandatory requirement. English is a mandatory requirement in order for them to receive any type of Visa to stay in this country. English is also a mandatory requirement for Citizens of another country in order for them to become an American Citizen and permanently remain in this country. English is also a language where one word can have more than one meaning, which gives us variety and the freedom to not always be perfect while communicating, but still able to express yourself in a way that is still understandable by others. I think that communicating in many different languages in one country is not only costly, because you would have to hire and pay an interpreter to communicate what you are trying to say to another person or party of people. Another reason I believe they decided to adopt only speaking English in America is because the language barrier poses a difficult way of translation of words, phrases, and statement. For example someone may say something in English, and they try to translate it in another language like mandarin, and they are unsuccessful in translating the English phrase because they may not have a word for it in Mandarin. When communicating in English I may say one thing in a slang” term as an amusing joke to a friend and they are able to understand what I am saying, because they understand the context in which I am communicating it in. According to (Should English be the official language of The United States?) “One language will bring everyone together into one. America is a country that is filled with many people from all over the world. It will be much easier to have just ONE language. It’s so confusing and annoying having to press 1 or 2 for English or Spanish when trying to talk to a customer representative. There should only be one option which is English. This way, everyone can understand each other
The society will be less divided and will function better under a common language. Although English-only movement has close connections to restrictionist, anti-immigration organizations, which suggests that the English-only movement has a wider, more far-reaching, and more negative agenda than simply advocating an official English language policy, English should be the official language of United States for two main reasons: first, In 1990 US census reported that 97.1 % of the US population speak English; second and most importantly, making English the official language of the United States refers solely to the language of the government, not of the people, private business, classrooms, or more. In addition, declare English the official language of the United States would make easier business and negotiations, more people will be able to participate in democracy system, the population will have a better understanding of laws, and the diversity of languages spoken in the US will not be affect, indeed, it would have an
In this country, we live in a mix culture and a mix race. When we walk out in the street, the first thing we notice is people from different ethnicities. The United States has always been the country where we come to make our dreams come true. Yet we never forget the country we came from. The languages is one thing we do not forget about our country but we should also know the English language. In this country it is essential for a person to know 2 or more languages. Regardless of how many languages we know, we all have a language we prefer over the other.
Yes I do believe that English based language should be use in a classroom and should be recognized because I don’t feel that it’s no child's fault the way they speak. Students lives will be hampered if they don't learn standard english. I think it should be recognized and utilize in a classroom because teachers should understand that some students are not taught to use based and standardized language. This my opinion on code meshing and code switching.
Not to mention, speaking English is a part of American heritage. Society should adapt to American culture and values, which means all American citizens should speak the nation’s primary language: English. If people refuse to speak and/or learn English, those individuals are rejecting American culture. America has always been extremely accepting and welcoming to all people of different backgrounds, so people should accept and adopt America’s primary language as well(Ciamarra). By establishing a common language among all people, the nation will thrive and
English as the official language of the United States could benefit the U.S. Government and America as a whole. America has long since been a multicultural nation and has been an English speaking nation since it was founded. The constitutional and federal documents are all in English, which furthers the American people, believing English should be our official language. The majority of states already have English as their official language, for English has always provided a much needed cohesion to our diverse citizens since it was founded.
When you come to the United States, you don’t think about the experience that you will face in here. The most important thing people don’t think about is the language, totally different from yours, like Spanish, how you are going to use it, when, at what specifically moment, how long is going take you to learn it, spoke the language, to write in English, what about people who go to school. The English is one of the most difficult things in the United State when you come to this country, because with the language you work, study and get prepare for a better future in here. I agree with this because, one of them is me. I have faced three experienced with the language here on this country, and them three in the school that I have attempt to. The three schools are in Veterans Memorial School, Woodrow Wilson High School and Camden Academy Charter High School.
It seems that this topic has been a heated debate for the past couple of decades, which has caused some division over the issue. I learned that there are a variety of pros and cons that you can argue about this issue. I chose to be a part of the pro English side for three reasons: I believe that making English our official language (1) would allow the education system to focus on English as the primary language, (2) it would unite our country in regards to racial discrimination, and (3) our government and business operations would be a little more streamlined.
Should the conflicting rights of non-English speaking people be taken away because of an English-only law? I think non-English speaking people have the right to speak their homeland language in public events and as part of their social lives. In America no one should be allowed to be a form of prisoner because of their native language. There should be laws or ordinances to prohibit persons from confronting—either verbally or physically- non-English speaking persons for speaking their native language in their work or social life. Whenever these confrontations prompt wide spread publicly, native English speaking Americans begin debating the degree of influence that non-English speaking people can have in the social, political, and economic realms.
Language can bring people together but can also isolate. The United States is known as a melting pot, not only does that refer to culture but also the many different languages. We know of language barriers, but very seldom do we think of the language barriers within our borders. Even with the language barriers it solidifies the need for a national language, the United States of America should allow the freedom to express one’s culture while maintaining English as our national language, therefore offering common ground to its citizens.
The main problem is that a multilingual government is not cheap. Today, our government makes it easy for immigrants to function in their native language. They make it easier through bilingual education, multilingual ballots and driver’s license exams, and government-funded translators in schools and hospitals (Mujica). Not only are these services expensive for American taxpayers, but it also keeps immigrants linguistically isolated. According to the 1990 Census, 13.8 percent of U.S. residents spoke some non-English at home, while 2.9 percent did not speak English at all or not well (Mount). There was a 52 percent increase in those who could not speak English in 2000 (Mujica).

Of course, opponents of mandatory foreign language courses will say that immigrants and naturalized citizens should learn and speak the "de facto" official language of the United States--English. It is a valid point, but misses the bigger picture. People who speak English as a second language are already bilingual, while American-born students typically are not. Language is the most fundamental aspect of a culture. Students who learn the not-so-foreign language of the predominant minority group in their region of the country will gain at least some insight into the different cultures of their neighbors and perhaps have a better understanding of them at the personal level.
