Welcome back to the Literature Appreciation Society, it is an honour to once again be surrounded by such fervent classic literature enthusiasts. In 1914, author Charlotte Perkins Gilman stated in her narrative If I Were a Man that “through literature we know the past, govern the present, and influence the future.” No truer words can embody the progressive value and brilliance pertaining to Gilman’s own literary body of works, in particular her accredited gothic novella The Yellow Wallpaper. Published in 1892, The Yellow Wallpaper is the chilling journal of protagonist Jane, and the harrowing tale of her descent into madness as a consequence of Victorian America’s patriarchal society. The texts’ classical worth was cemented by Gilman’s accurate illustration of truths within Victorian America. Through a range of literary devices, she depicted the realities of her time within The Yellow Wallpaper by foregrounding female subjugation and the lapse in accurate medical judgement. This accreditation is evident through her position on several canons and the ongoing study of her work within colleges (Gerald Weales, 1993). Gilman not only challenged the dominate discourse of the time, but shifted it entirely through the revolutionary and progressive ideas and style presented in her canon. In contemporary society, the ongoing worth of The Yellow Wallpaper is palpable, owing to the novella’s authentic portrayal of Victorian ideals. These ideals remain crucial to investigate due to the importance of evading any reoccurrence of social inequality within our society. Thankyou everyone for joining me today in recognizing the genius that is Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I hope you have gained some insight into the importance of her work. I will now take any questions.
