Originally, I enrolled in English 1301 because it was a required college class. I believed that I had already learned everything regarding writing in high school. I was wrong. English class turned out to be quite challenging. I learned many new concepts about writing and grammar. Taking this class enabled me to be a better writer. All the knowledge I gained while taking English class will help me further my college career and be a better student.
In the first lesson of English 1301, Mr. Mayo taught us the importance of narrative, patterns of organization, and description. The first major essay the class was assigned was a personal narrative. First person essentially uses the pronoun “I”, second person uses the pronoun “you”, and third person is objective/unbiased. The second major assignment we were given taught us how to summarize the works of other authors. Mr. Mayo taught us that a summery identifies a work’s main ideas and outlines key points. Additionally, we were taught about emphatic sequence. Emphatic sequence is organizing ideas on a paper in order of importance. Furthermore while preparing for this assignment, the class was taught about ethos, logos, and pathos, and that while writing an argumentative/persuasive essay, one must use ethos, logos, and pathos if he wants to receive respect from the reader. In preparation for the research paper, Mr. Mayo educated the class on types of secondary sources. For example: general web, blogs, popular media, trade business, and government are all types of secondary sources. We also learned that blogs and Wikipedia cannot be used as evidence or credible sources. Mr. Mayo provided several examples of each secondary source. The class was also taught how to cite in a research paper, and how to create a works cited
