Pro English as A Global Language At this very moment, you might be sitting and munching on something. I’m also guessing that you know how to read and speak the English language. So, what are your thoughts about the English language? Is it nice, easy, or simply boring? Are you forced to speak English? These are easily answered questions. Though, the real question is, how would you feel about English becoming a global language? Many people already know it, so might as well make it a global language. Also, English has the audacity to allow an effortless communication between diverse cultures. Even though many native languages will be affected by it in multiple ways, mainly in a negative way, English should be encouraged all around the world as …show more content…
English has the power to make communication much easier across different countries that have different cultures, hence different languages. In same interview conducted by Seham Kawthar, the interviewee states that English is a way interact with other people from different countries which you don’t know their language. The reason why the interviewee learned English was because many people knew how to speak English. Knowing English, one can communicate with other people wherever they go because English is spoken in a lot of countries. In Dennis Baron’s article called “The Tongue Who Would Be King,” that was published in Science and Spirit Newspaper in the year 2011, English has an official status in few colonies such as Nigeria, India, and many more countries around the world. It is used as a third language in order for people to communicate with each other from different cultures (p. 32). This is true because it can be in many places. Many friends tend to communicate to each other because they don’t know each other’s languages. Having English as a global language would not require any translations, similar to the pre-Babel days, where everyone spoke one language (p. 32). When everyone knows one common language, it makes it much easier to speak to each other. English is said to make communication easier amongst people just like the Latin language once did (p.33). For instance, English is used to communicate between diplomats and politicians from different countries to come to terms and world
Usage of English language has its purpose, to convey meaning and understanding to a certain audience. But how does that affect one who does not speak or understand the language? People still communicate in their own Native tongues and have so for many years. With the globalization of many companies today, communication is very critical. Without effective communication, markets of today would be limited as there would be no exports or imports, etc.
“Language is power” (LaForest 205). A power that can change throughout time using people and communication. Language helps communicate with other people. Lately, different countries have been learning English to help communicate with one another. As a result, English classes were created. However, is English the way to go? What are the effects of learning English or will English cause tension with other languages?
As the English language gets more and more prevalent around the world, more and more discussions will come up about what a global language would look like. David Harrison author of “When Languages Die” writes about what will be lost when other languages die out and another rises. Harrison focuses more on the negatives of what a global language would look like rather than the positives. The author of “Why a global language” writes about the good and the bad that would come from a global language.
On one hand, many countries have adopted English as their official language. On the other, most others have a good amount of English speakers in their communities. From translators to well-versed merchants and business people, there is always someone who can give you a hand. This is a direct result of the influence that English has in today’s society. If you learn enough of this language to interact with others, you will have a much easier time as a tourist. If you have a hobby that involves a lot of traveling and/or talking to people in other parts or the world, you can quickly further your individual pursuits; the possibilities are endless. From the recreational world to the more professional realm, people can and will take advantage of this universality of one language to
With the growing number of English speaking persons, there would be a lesser degree of misunderstanding, which can have detrimental effects. The textbook definition of globalization is “the process that is making the world’s citizens increasingly interdependent economically, politically, environmentally, and technologically.” This source relates to the theme of globalization because of the fact that everyone around the world has heard some form of blues and jazz, and has spoken / heard about the English language. Governments can then further increase the rate of hybridization by integrating foreign aspects into their culture, which will “always make a culture better.” The writer of this quote states that hybridization is a very important aspect in making one’s culture
Wouldn’t it be something if we could all communicate with each other? All should know English and speak it so that communication is easier to accomplish! Language is essential to communication, English is everywhere, Spanish is growing,
My earlier paper highlights how English is acting as a killer language for native languages. As globalisation has created a global village, the people of different languages need a lingua franca to communicate with one another. At present, English is a true lingua franca and a global language. Crystal opines “a language achieves a genuinely global status when it develops a special role that is recognised in every country.” (Crystal 3) English is spoken in different parts of the world as first, second or foreign language. Crystal calculates that nearly 85% of international organizations and 99% of European organizations are using English as official language. Crystal discovers link between language dominance and economic, technological and cultural power. Language with strong power base propagates as international language. He opines a language achieves its role as international language due to its political and military power. This is very true in case of English. During Roman Empire, Latin was used as an international language. In nineteenth century, English language grows with the growth of Britain. Britain became world power and its imperial policies led to the spread of English around the globe. No doubt, colonialism led to the global use of English. It grows rapidly by coming in touch with local languages, which makes English a hybrid language changing and growing to meet communicative needs. In nineteenth century, it becomes a global language, “a language on which the sun never sets.” (Graddol, future 6) Graddol estimates that approximately 1.5 billion people in the world are using English as a first or second language. It becomes the international currency of science and technology. It occupies a d...
There is no doubt that English has been the dominant global language for a century, but is it the language of future? Thousands of people have thousands of answers. Maybe it still need time to tell. As David Crystal (1...
There is some evidence that suggest, English has spread naturally in the world and as a result it is now a ‘lingua franca’ the common language that everyone knows. English has made our life easier in many ways. Because the world was in need of a world language, it was spread naturally in the world. According to Hung (2009), English language does not undermine other languages. He states, English has joined the global community and it has introduced the culture and national identification of them to the whole people living on Earth. According to him, English language assists the people in the era of communication with...
Because of English we have come closer to countries on the other side of the world. English will continue to have a big role in todays society because it is a lingua franca. In smaller languages like Norwegian, Swedish and Danish the language is constantly changing, they take in slang words and English words that they just put a Norwegian, Swedish or Danish twist. Some languages are almost completely gone because of English. Most of these languages are only spoken and not written and are therefor more vulnerable to being lost. Other languages take in English and use both languages an example is Spanglish where both English and Spanish is used. Some examples of how that is used is: Aplicación” in place of "solicitud (application), Remover" in place of "quitar" (to remove). Another one is Hinglish which is a mix between English and Hindu. It is the same as in Spanglish where they take a word from Hindu and mix it with English. Many countries around the world have English as there second language, in Norway we have EFL (English as a forging language), because we learn it in school.
According to Hudson, a variety is ‘a set of linguistic items with similar social distribution’ . Since the term dialect has acquired a negative connotation throughout the years, academics have started to use the term variety, which is considered more neutral, instead.
English has evolved in the last hundred years from being a fragment of the old Latin world to being widely spoken around the new world. Despite living in America, we see international meetings where leaders of many countries all speak English to communicate with each other. Is it possible that English has become the lingua franca and will continue into the future to be the global language? There are many sources that indicate that future can only hold English as its selected language. In the future we will have a variety of “Englishes” that will dominate global communication, and this will occur because the dominance of English is believed to be ‘inevitable’, practical to foreign nations, and finally it appeals to a multicultural perspective for a cosmopolitan society.
Although English may not be the most widely spoken language in the world as it comes in third after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, it is undeniably the universal language of the 21st century with an estimated sum of over 800 million users on a regular basis worldwide, with 340 million native speakers and 510 million who speak English as a second or foreign language. 60 countries have English as their official language and it is the commonly adopted second language of many countries, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the Commonwealth nations such as Malaysia. It is the language of diplomacy and the official language of the United Nations and other international bodies. Learning English is beneficial to an individual as it helps one increase their communicative abilities. While native as well as non-native users may not be fluent in written English, speaking English can be just good enough. Thus, if one possesses a strong command of the language, he will face no problems communicating with his peers and colleagues be it at school, at work or even on social
Even though there are advantages as well as disadvantages, the need for international language for communication, politics, economics and security is necessary and English is the best “language candidate” for that function. English is a language spread all over the world and it is used by millions and millions of speakers. According to my opinion, people should use English as a tool to communicate with all cultures but every country must keep their culture and language is a great part of it. In conclusion, language defines identity of a country and everyone should keep their language and explore others.
English is an international language. It has been used as a communication media by all people in the world. English is an important language that must be mastered by all people of all community in the world.
