What do you use for fuel? It is probably is gasoline or diesel. Well, there is another source of fuel, and it is renewable. Biofuels are fuel made of organic material, and where energy is produced from plants. One biofuel, ethanol, could eventually replace gasoline (petroleum). Biofuels are a cleaner energy than fossil fuels, but there are advantages and disadvantages for both biofuels and fossil fuels.
Biofuels contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Organic material like vegetable oil can be used to produce biofuel. Bioethanol is produced from things like corn, sugarcane, trees, biomass, and parts of plants, like corn stalks. Algae can also be used to make biofuels.
Biofuels are being used in North America and Europe. “Biodiesel makes up about 3% of the German market and 0.15% of the U.S. market, and about 1 billion gallons of biodiesel are produced annually”(Biofuel Facts). Ethanol is used more in North and South America, and Europeans use biodiesel more than ethanol. Most of the ethanol in the world, 87% of it, is produced by the United States and Brazil. In total the amount of Bioethanol used for fuel produced each year is more than 22 billion gallons (Biofuel Facts). Ethanol is mixed in with gas to reduce emissions, and to run a cleaner engine. Similarly, biodiesel is blended with diesel to reduce emissions and to improve the life of the engine.
Ethanol is one type of biofuel that can be used for cars. In fact, The Model T was designed to run on ethanol. “All Biofuels Are Not Created Equal” is a very informative article that everyone should be aware of. The authors of this article show how biofuels can be made to benefit Earth. Our ecological footprint is so big that everyone requires 2.5 Earths to maintain the same lifestyle. What does this reveal? It reveals that Earth’s resources are being diminished. This means that the world needs to do something to prevent this so Earth can last for future generations. The way that biofuels are being made is not very effective in helping this problem. This is because it either requires deforestation or the burning of fossil fuels, which the world is trying to stop. Instead of using corn or sugar cane as ethanol, alternative crops should be used because it will benefit our environment the most.
Biofuels, fuels that provide energy using relatively recent organic sources, have been around just as long as cars have. In fact, the first cars ran on peanut oil. Henry Ford, founder of a multimillion dollar American car company, planned to fuel his massively successful Model T’s with ethanol (National Geographic 2013.) However, this revolutionary idea was swept under the rug when the discovery of massive petroleum deposits kept gasoline and diesel cheap and affordable. As 2014 rolls around, consumers are starting see that the amount of petroleum in the Earth is shrinking and the same story goes for their wallets (Avro 2012.) Not only does burning gas and diesel empty out the wallet, it is also slowly covering the Earth with a warm carbon dioxide blanket that causes global warming. Transportation, which is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gasses (Biofuel Association of Australia 2013), is dependent on finite amounts of gas and diesel for its energy needs so it is very important we move towards a more renewable and sustainable fuel source. Biofuels, both ethanol and biodiesel, have the potential to fuel transportation efficiently and drastically reduce the carbon footprint, thus reducing the warm blanket of carbon dioxide on the Earth.
One day I pulled up to a gas station, and to my surprise I saw a new sticker on the pump. The sticker read,” Fuel may contain 10% Ethanol.” I was a little taken back by the sticker. I didn’t have a full understanding of why ethanol was being used in the fuel for my car. I knew that ethanol was a bi-product of corn and other plants, so I found myself asking the question, is corn for food or fuel? I got back into my car and returned to the freeway with this question on my mind. While driving I started noticing stickers and labels on other vehicles that read: CNG (compressed natural gas), Flex Fuel (allows vehicles to go between 2 different fuels), HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), and Bio-diesel (cleaner burning diesel fuel, made from plants or vegetable oils). As I pondered about the various labeling, I found myself most curious about ethanol and other bio-fuel products.
