Let’s explore the ways that energy is taken into the body and the ways that energy is taken out of the body. After studying this idea of energy balance you will see that there are many factors, not simply just calories, involved. a. Next, explain how basal metabolism, physical activity, and adaptive thermogenesis are involved in energy balance. • Basal metabolism is important in energy balance because it controls energy and keeps your internal organs functioning properly. It is important to keep your body satisfied with foods and drinks so that when you are doing other things such as sleeping the body still has enough energy stored to keep all of your vital organs going. Without this your organs with fails which would eventually lead to death. It is important for people to stay healthy and provide the body with proper nutrients. The healthier a person is, the easier it is for the body to produce energy for things such as physical activity. Physical activity is important and keeps the body strong. The amount of energy expenditure depends on the type of physical activity, duration, intensity and frequency. It is important for each person to get at least an hour of physical activity a day. Age, growth, gender are all important factor when estimating energy requirements. Adaptive thermogenesis is some sort of adjustment that the body has to make in regards to energy when focusing on changes in the environment. Each individual is different when it comes to adaptive thermogenesis and the body reacts differently with every situation. It is important to have energy stored and ready to go for those “fight or flight” situations that may require the body to work harder.
