Emergency Medical Services Workers
Emergency medical services (EMS) workers are Emergency medical services (EMS) workers are primary providers of pre-hospital emergency medical care and integral components of disaster response. The potentially hazardous job duties of EMS workers include lifting patients and equipment, treating patients with infectious illnesses, handling hazardous chemical and body substances, and participating in the emergency transport of patients in ground and air vehicles. These duties create an inherent risk for EMS worker occupational injuries and illnesses; and research has shown that they have high rates of fatal injuries and nonfatal injuries and illnesses.
EMS workers include first responders,
Lastly, paramedics have a very important job besides driving an ambulance. Paramedics use special equipment such as backboards, to immobilize patients before placing them on stretchers and securing them in the ambulance for transport to a medical facility ( Paragraph 3, Overview EMT Paramedic 2). For instance in order to be able to do this. Paramedics must have a lot of skills and strength to be able to lift the backboards with the patient on it without hurting the patient. Especially when transporting the patient from the backboard onto the stretcher. A medic does everything an ER nurse does and Doctor does, but in a smaller space moving at 55 MPH ( Paragraph 7, Paramedics Threaten Strike 2). Even though paramedics are not in the hospital
Shortly after the death of my best friend, I decided to become an EMT and try to save and help others. After I passed the state exam and received my EMT license, I went to work for White County Ambulance in Carmi. I worked there for three years and it was such a great experience. I enjoyed serving the community and I did so many amazing things. I also went through some not so great times when patient's couldn't be saved, children were hurt, overdoses, telling family members their loved ones has passed and many sleepless nights, bad coffee and junk food. The good outweighs the bad though, in a landslide. The pay Illinois EMT's make is laughable and I would have to work 72-96 hours just to make a decent paycheck. I was away from my own family
Emergency Medical Responders are always the first persons to arrive on an emergency scene. They work in many different fields including law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, and medical dispatchers. Responders risk their lives every day to carry out treatment to others in need. If we didn’t have the Emergency Medical System, many lives would be lost due to the lack of transportation, and aid immediately. Responders must follow steps to ensure safety on an emergency scene.
Various factories, hospitals, police units, and firefighting squads are required to have people on call during all hours of the night. While this requirement does benefit the greater population, it requires a set of employees to stay up all night: working. Although these shifts are necessary for companies to produce products, or to be alert in case of emergencies, there are many downfalls to working this extra time. The care for and safety of employees should be top priority over the amount of product, profit, and similar factors. Understanding the risks that employees face when working night shifts is one issue that should be made more apparent to the supervisors and corporate workers of companies, enabling them to take necessary precautions
Being a paramedic requires patience, care and the ability to act/think on the spot. It is also an incredibly dangerous profession. According to Safe Work Australia (SWA), in 2007 paramedics have the sixth highest rate of occupational injuries and for men, the sixth highest rate of new mental health stress claims (The Medical Journal of Australia 2014, pp. 477). Most of these injuries are injuries resulting from violence against paramedics by bystanders or the patient, back injuries and transportation-related injuries (The Medical Journal of Australia 2014, pp. 477). Shockingly, over 17 Australian paramedics per year receive severe injuries due to violence (The Medical Journal of Australia 2014, pp. 478).
There is considerable degree of inter-provincial variation in the Canadian Paramedic practice. Although a national consensus (by way of the National Occupational Competency Profile) identifies certain knowledge, skills, and abilities as being most synonymous with a given level of Paramedic practice, each province retains ultimate authority in legislating the actual administration and delivery of emergency medical services within its own borders. For this reason, any discussion of Paramedic Practice in Canada is necessarily broad, and general. Specific regulatory frameworks and questions related to Paramedic practice can only definitively be answered by consulting relevant provincial legislation, although provincial Paramedic Associations may
Being a paramedic has been a long term goal for me upon graduating high school. As I was planning my future and looking at the different career choices, I began discussing my interest in the public safety and medical field with one of my sisters. My sister suggested I should look into becoming an EMT and using it as a stepping stone for a future career. I thoroughly enjoyed the knowledge and skills I obtained upon becoming an EMT, I have decided that I want to further my education in order to provide a higher level of care to my patients and grow in the medical field.
I oriented EMT Soper on 7/10/16. EMT Soper was on time and prepared for shift. EMT Soper showed a lot of initiative and ask many questions in the beginning of the shift, when there was downtime. EMT Soper and I went over some of his EMT Field Evaluation forms. We went over where the equipment is stored and how to apply equipment. I did not want to complete any more field evaluation forms until I saw EMT Soper work as a care giver. EMT Soper had 2 calls both utilizing ALS, one that was recalled enroute to the hospital due to proximity. EMT Soper was hesitant on the first call, but was easily corrected. He obtained accurate vitals during both calls. EMT Soper ask appropriate questions at times, but still needs to work and build on his patient
With all this information I found about becoming an EMT I ask myself what do I think about EMT’s? I think they are interesting because they risk their own lives to save other people's lives they don't even known, or delivering a baby. Like you feel like you’re the only person on the planet and you have a split second to save a person’s life. Now I ask myself am I still interested in becoming an EMT, yes I am I would feel like everybody will look up to me to save their lives if they are in a crisis. You will build a relationship with your partners unlike any other. When you work with somebody for so long you know what they are thinking before they even know what they are thinking. This must happen so that patients can be taken care of in a timely,
