The concept that I find most important in this module is active listening. Active listening is the verbal and nonverbal cues one person uses to respond to another which improves mutual understanding. Active listening enables us to receive the whole message and allows us to respond appropriately. I believe that active listening is important because it cultivates long-term trusting relationships which are an important skill to have as an effective leader. Active listening enables you to be an overall better communicator with subordinates, peers, and supervisors and improves workplace productivity.
One of the biggest pros is having access to an experienced person’s knowledge and contacts. Another big pro is the ability to get quick honest answers to your questions; also you can gain a different perspective not just the ones from your peers. Honest feedback is also a good pro in an excellent mentoring program because an individual can receive honest feedback on what they are doing well and what skills they are deficient in and how to improve. Honest and constructive feedback can be a win-win situation for everyone involved because the organization gains a well-rounded employee and the employee becomes more efficient in doing their job well (Lipman.2017). A good mentor can help mentees to set realistic and honest career goals and development especially if they have already been through the process.
This is where emotional intelligence really makes a difference. Constructive feedback can be an effective tool when coaching other people in order to praise their strengths and develop the areas where they need to improve. The coachee’s performance and behaviour must be the focus and not the nature of the coachee. This will guarantee a positive response and understandings which will make the coaching effective. The positive attitude towards the coachee will boost self-confidence and assure sustainable learning and development.
Being intelligent contributes to a leader’s ability to solve problems; their degree of higher intelligence also enhances their perceived competence compared to their followers. The leader himself behaves in a specific way in order to motivate his employees to emulate his illustration of how good employees conduct themselves. It is of the utmost importance that a transformational leader has a high level of emotional intelligence.
It facilitates better communication and it motivates employees. The more comfortable your employees are to express their ideas and opinions, the more confident they will become. This will motivate them to take on new challenges. Team building also promotes creativity and develops problem solving skills. It also breaks the barrier because team building increases the trust factor with your employees.
We are also better at negotiation due to the very nature of our ability to understand the needs and desires of others. It’s easier to give people what they want if we can perceive what it is. The ability to understand what motivates others, relate in a positive manner, and to build stronger bonds with others in the workplace inevitably makes those with higher emotional intelligence better leaders. An effective leader can recognize what the needs of his people are, so that those needs can be met in a way that encourages higher performance and workplace satisfaction. An emotionally savvy and intelligent leader is also able to build stronger teams by strategically utilizing the emotional diversity of their team members to benefit the team as a whole.
