Emily Dickinson was seen as one of the greatest female poets in the nineteenth century. Dickinson was born on December 10th, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts. She attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, but only for one year. Throughout her life she kept to herself and had little to no friends. Those who she was close to had a big impact on her poetry. By 1860 Dickinson lived almost completely in isolation. However, she did spend that time with her family. Dickinson’s father was in politics, even served in congress for one term. Dickinson’s brother attended law school and her sister also lived within the home isolated from the outside world. The poems are written in short stanzas but when analyzing them one can clearly see how the simple words together have a much deeper meaning. The tone used behind her words often are depicted as a double edge sword. Dickinson tended to use “I” in her poems not referring to herself but to the reader. In the book Emily Dickinson and Philosophy published by Cambridge University press, describe what Dickinson means by “I” perfectly,
“ To be human in Dickinson’ s poems is to be radically open. The self she describes, however con fi ned, is always subject to the invasion of something exterior, as if to be a self is to be a fluid membrane or a bundle of nerves. There is no consolation or possibility of fl ight from an impinging world”(chapter 11).
Dickinson means more of a spiritual being when she wrote “I”. Also, she didn’t title most of her poems about ten out of all of her poems are actually titled. We do not realize that we are capable of such heroism. Then if everything plays out right our possibilities are limitless. Fate has a funny way of working, one decision can change your life, or someone else 's life. We, as humans, tend to overlook things and think that we do not have a big impact, or are even worthless at times. We do not realise how great we can be. One simple choice might seem insignificant now but can later lead to saving a life. Granted no one knows if they will even get the chance to step up and be a hero within their lifetime. Therefore it is even more crucial that if and when a chance to step up is presented, to take the chance. For there is no do overs or second chances in life, everything can change in one moment, one decision can change life
