This is because influences in ones early life will usually foreshadow some of their thinking and views in later life, for the most part. David Emile Durkeim was born in 1858 in France to a devout, conservative and influential Jewish family. His patriarchal lineage was rabbis and it was expected that he would follow the same path. After teaching philosophy for several years, he left for Germany where he studied sociology. His published works earned him a teaching job back in France in 1887, which indicated the recognition of the social sciences. He did marry and have two children. He was recognized and left a legacy of a founding thinker in sociology when he died in 1917, during the darkest days of WWI.
