In the article “One Foot Out of the Nest: How Parents and Friends Influence Social Perceptions in Emerging Adulthood,” there was a study about emerging adulthood. The study aimed to understand about how attachment-related feelings toward friends and parents affect perceptions of new people and developing relational patterns during emerging adulthood.
Background Studies
Past studies have found that for young adults, both romantic and parental attachment representations can influence reactions to novel individuals. Although attachment in young adulthood has been explored, the literature has largely neglected to address the issue of how shifting social factors affect significant-other representation accessibility and influence and this study addresses this gap by exploring how transference processes in young adulthood are impacted by social variables in the lives of adults.
Hypothesis
They hypothesized that people would use friend representations to interpret strangers, especially friend-likes strangers. They also hypothesized that friendship importance, the amount of contact with a friend or parent, and the degree to which a friend or parent fulfills attachment-related needs
Methodology

... important, and when people rely heavily on friends and parents to fulfill attachment related needs. Concluding, the outcomes of the study contribute to our understanding of emerging adulthood relationship processes and the impact of ongoing relationships in that life period.
After reading this article, I found it interesting how the period of emerging adulthood makes many common changes in educational paths, jobs, love partners, and identity. I feel like this study offers compelling evidence that both close friendships and parental relationships influence young adults’ perceptions of new people, though in different ways. Close friends appear to shape impressions of only those who resemble one’s personal friends, while parents tend to influence anxiety toward people who are generally parent-like or older. Overall I believe it was a very interesting article.
