First on a Scene Emergency Medical Responders are always the first persons to arrive on an emergency scene. They work in many different fields including law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, and medical dispatchers. Responders risk their lives every day to carry out treatment to others in need. If we didn’t have the Emergency Medical System, many lives would be lost due to the lack of transportation, and aid immediately. Responders must follow steps to ensure safety on an emergency scene. If you are an EMR you must first size up the scene. This means making sure the scene is safe to proceed because your own safety comes before patient care. You should look for patient(s), determine how many are injured, and which ones will need special assistance. Inform the dispatcher on what additional personnel are needed (police, fire service). Next, you determine each patient’s primary injury. If the patient is conscious try to get as much information as you can, or ask bystanders about what they have seen. …show more content…

You must use techniques to decrease the chance of injuring yourself and further injuring the patient. The most medical lawsuits involving prehospital care are negligence. If you do not do what you’re expected to do and did it carelessly, you may then be charged with negligence. Therefore you should handle a patient with care and working to your best ability. While you’re waiting, you must be the patient’s advocate. Being an advocate is explaining diagnoses and procedures in a language a patient can understand. You’re also there to support, but without giving the patient false
