Flooding is when large amounts of water suddenly invade an area which had been normally dry (Oxford Advanced learners Dictionary). Floods are one of those disasters which are still a major thread to the world despite the so many efforts to combat it. These are natural hazards because though they are brought about by a natural phenomenon, they often cause lots of damage. The immediate impact on survivors is likely to be injury and death of relatives, damage to crops, housing and infrastructure can also conspire to precipitate acute food shortages and homelessness, water supplies may be contaminated with sewage leading disease. When an area is suspected to be at risk of a flood, it is necessary to assess the area of the likelihood, severity and consequences of the flood; it be cost effective more efficient if the available local resources and capabilities are identified. In order to better prepared, activities that will enable an in-dept understanding of incident will be carried out, also, measures to prevent or minimize the effects of the flood are also identified and implementation. Early Warning and Alert Systems Warnings must be rapidly disseminated to government officials, institutions and the population at large in areas of immediate risks so that actions may be taken timely, either to evacuate or secure property and prevent further damage. The response process should ascertain how the population is warned of emergency and also identify those responsible for notifying others. Systems which monitor disasters should be put in place in association with organizations that monitor disasters; someone other than the public relations officer who will be in charge of sharing information with the media should be installed.
