Was the emancipation proclamation more a military tactic rather than based-feelings towards the slaves?
Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 during the civil war, as main goal to win the war. Some historians argued that it was based on feelings towards slaves because not only it freed slaves in the South; it was also a huge step for the real abolition of slavery in the United States. While other historians argued that it was a military tactic because it strengthened the Union army, because the emancipated slaves were joining the Union thus providing a larger manpower than the Confederacy . The Emancipation Proclamation emancipated slaves only in the Confederacy and did not apply to the Border-states and the Union states.
"A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved - I do not expect the house to fall - but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other," said by Abraham Lincoln. In 1860 President Abraham Lincoln swore to keep slavery out of the territories, as a result the states in the south seceded and founded a new nation, the Confederate States of America. The government and most of the northern states refused to recognize the validity of their secession. They feared that the United States was going to drift apart and not be unified. They wanted to preserve the union at any cost. The civil war began
Is what you know about the Emancipation Proclamation factually correct? The Emancipation Proclamation was published in 1863. Lincoln took a whole year to write it, but what were his intentions. Many people believe that it was freeing the slaves, but on the other hand people also believe it was about saving the union. The people who think it was about restoring the Union believe so because Lincoln said “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it...” Another reason people think this way is because in one of the old slanderous political cartoons it shows Lincoln with a mallet that says “Emancipation Proclamation” and he is breaking the backbone of the confederacy with it ; and finally because the Emancipation Proclamation was originally just

The Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation led to the end of slavery, and is one of the most controversial documents in American history.
Human slavery was the focus of political conflict in the United States from the 1830s to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate for presidency in 1860, personally abhorred slavery and was pledged to prevent it from spreading to western territories. At the same time he believed that the Constitution did not allow federal government to prohibit slavery in states where it already existed.
However, the emancipation proclamation came as a beacon of light to every Negro who had gone through struggles given to an individual of color were being seared in the flame of injustice. The proclamation is a historical document which disregarding time still here today because it's designed to deliver blacks from racial injustice it was their saving grace. The Civil War was started due to the rise in tension between the Northern states and Southern states about how the new western territories should be added to the Union, whether or not they were going to be slave states or free states. When Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860, the first wave of southern states seceded (Woods). The second wave followed later that year and halfway into 1861 (Woods). The war official started after the bombardment on Fort Sumter (Woods). During the first couple of years of the war slavery became an even more pressing issue then it was before and became one of the main reasons the war was fought over, that and having the Confederacy rejoin the Union. In Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men, by Eric Foner, a new political party of the
period of the mid-1800's is examined. This was a party that had the partnership of the
President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It was not only his beliefs but the
beliefs of this political party, the republican party, that helped build tension into what
would become the Civil War. It was founded as a pro-active party, a party of doers, not
sayers.
One of Abraham Lincoln’s truly noble and well-known actions was the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. This would proclaim all the slaves in the United States free from slavery. Though this meant little to the South at the time, it means everything today.
Although the initial reason for the war was to unite the nation, abolition of slavery became a major cause as well. Earlier, Lincoln attempted to end slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation Act which was supposed to free slaves in the Confederate states. Due to its failure, the Union included the slavery issue in the Civil War, although morality for the blacks did not interest them, they were loathe to the viciousness of slavery. Subsequent to the war, the North experienced major improvement in its economic status. Moreover the shift of political power from the South to the North altered the direction of American development from an agricultural nation to industrial capitalism. On the other hand; the Civil War left the South in a state of chaos. While the North experienced a large statistic in casualties, the Southern percentage of victims was much greater. Moreover, much of the Southern land was destroyed and the focus of the economy shifted to the North leaving the Confederates in a poor financial
