When DeGeneres first came out it brought attention to the LGBTQ community but as her career grew, her role in the community grew as well. Her stardom shed light on the community and changed the view point of the others on the community as more accepting. Perspectives of DeGeneres and the LGBTQ community has changed in a positive way over time. When DeGeneres first came out it brought a lot of attention to her but it her career took a fall due to it, it wasn’t until she scored a role in Disney’s Finding Nemo did her career begin to skyrocket.

It wasn’t until her premiere as the character ‘Dory’ in Disney’s 2003 film Finding Nemo. Her role in the film started her career back up. “It’s well documented that Ellen took a huge hit for that episode after it aired. Her sitcom was cancelled. She couldn’t get acting parts on other shows and she’s admitted that she went through a period of depression. But when she lent her easily-distinguishable voice to the adorable Dory in 2003’s Finding Nemo, the comic-turned-TV personality saw her career turn around” (Bendix). After her role in Finding Nemo she began her own talk show called The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The Ellen DeGeneres show skyrocketed Ellen’s career. “The Ellen DeGeneres Show has won 13 Emmys and 14 People’s Choice Awards, and for its entire run has consistently delivered excellent ratings” (Bendix). With her career explosion DeGeneres helped change the view point of the LGBTQ
She actually never thought of being an actor, especially a famous one. She wanted to become a marine biologist and her whole career just started with one accidental trip to the club. Rosie started starring in many movies such as 'Do the Right Thing' in 1989 and 'Night on Earth' in 1991; she has been in a total of 34 movies. I reached many other people since last week, some of them did not show much interest in doing the interview when they heard it was about homosexual representation analysis; the other people were unable to do the interview because the lack of time or other reasons. Anyway, diverse interviewees were picked to convey a considerably fair research for the attitudes toward the homosexual representation in the show Glee. These three chosen interview subjects not only vary in race (Both my boss and my roommate are Asian-American and my friend’s sister Lily is Caucasian) but also in gender (My boss is male and the other two are female). Because the main focus of the show Glee is about daily life of a group of high school students who attend their school glee club, the audience’s age range is unavoidably narrow. Despite the fact
In Vicki L. Eaklor’s Queer America, the experiences of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender people in the years since the 1970s gay liberation movement are described as a time of transformation and growth. The antigay movement, threatened, now more than ever, created numerous challenges and obstacles that are still prevalent today. Many of the important changes made associated with the movement were introduced through queer and queer allied individuals and groups involved in politics. Small victories such as the revision of the anti discrimination statement to include “sexual orientation”, new propositions regarding the Equal Rights Amendment and legalized abortion, were met in turn with growing animosity and resistance from individuals and groups opposed to liberal and
For my interview portion of this response I interviewed a friend of mine named Nicole who is a bisexual. When I asked her about her fears of coming out her she said that her only fear was being seen as some kind of pervert or sexual predator.” I came out to my friends first, some were shocked but soon it just became something that people just knew and after awhile it became just as relevant as my hair color”. She also stated that after she came out to her friends some of those friends came out to her soon after. She admitted she was treated differently by people because of the discrimination bisexuals get by both hetrosexuals and homosexuals.“People tolerate bisexuals but they are not respected” She said that many people treated her as if she was confused or like she was only pretending to like girls because they believe that would attract men. She explained that most people tend to believe that bisexuality doesn’t exist.

Not many know how to achieve success in all categories, but Tina Fey didn’t have any problems figuring that out. Tina fey, television writer, screenwriter, actress, comedian, and mother, has taken the world by storm. Tina Fey has a powerful influence on our world today and she has become a worldwide icon in the eyes of many young women. Tina Fey may have been THE woman to make it stylish to wear glasses in the mid-2000s, but there is more to this multi-talented woman then those trademark black-rimmed spectacles.
She made an impact in the world through many of her opportunities that she accomplished. First off, Rivers changed the role of women in the comedian and show business world. She made the topics discussed more equal and portrayed women as having just as successful careers as men. Next, her books inspired people to look from within and change the world for the better. The books allowed for the readers to explore through Joan’s struggles in life and to see how she overcame those struggles. Joan Rivers created a jewelry brand that would give women the feeling of inner self confidence. Rivers portrayed older women in a better light. Just because a person is old, doesn’t mean their career is over. In a way, she motivates older women to keep striving for their goals, despite the criticism. Joan was successful in winning Celebrity Apprentice, giving her face time on NBC and allowing her career to pick up again. Throughout life, Joan always looked for the next open door, yet as she aged, and opportunities came and went, she was able to live in the moment and appreciate the opportunity at hand. She never knew when the last opportunity would come, therefore she endured life with inner satisfaction. At times, River’s would show frustration, but she never gave up. Rivers would give back to the community. For instance, around Thanksgiving time, she would pass out meals to those who were unable to prepare food for
For years, LGBT issues weren’t as accepted as it is now. Many things in the media, books, and music excluded Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people, and the few that did, didn’t help the movement as much. You have books that kill off lesbian characters, gay men were stereotypicality feminine, nobody believed in bisexuality, and transgendered people lived their lives as drag queens. The lives of LGBT were kept a secret, nobody knew what would happen if this secret was revealed. Now, we have gained knowledge and started treating LGBT in the media better, not as great as it should. The song, “Born This Way”, by Lady Gaga brings the issue of pro-LGBT and self-love front and center for the world to listen when analyzed using a cultural lens.
Explaining how to challenge the discriminatory attitudes that remain rampant throughout the world, Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in a recent article, quotes the incisive words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu: "We are all of equal worth, born equal in dignity and born free and for this reason deserving respect. . . . We belong in a world whose very structure, whose essence, is diversity almost bewildering in extent, and it is to live in a fool's paradise to ignore this basic fact."
At one point Ellen DeGeneres got kicked off of a talk show, but it wasn’t for her performance, it was because she came out as lesbian and the talk show did not accept that. But instead of giving up, Ellen decided to take her career in her own hands by doing that she raised to fame years later. But how did she come from being at rock bottom to an inspiration to so many? It was a journey but in order to inspire, Ellen persuaded the audience to stay true to themselves by using pathos and ethos.
Media is changing and there is gradually more positive and highly visible LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) role models. I will let the kids recognize some LGBT role models through the media, such as video, newspaper and magazine. I will introduce LGBT role models and explain why they will do so. I will also answer their continuous questions as they must feel curious and strange to these LGBT role models.
The depiction of transgender women characters in mainstream television has been offensive, insulting and derogatory. An article from GLADD called “Victims or Villains: Examining Ten Years of Transgender Images on Television”, examines 102 episodes and storylines on mainstream television that contained transgender characters since 2002. Of these, more than half were characterized as containing negative representations of transgender. In 2007 only 1% of television series had a recurring transgender character, which has slowly increased to 4% in 2013.
...nted the world to know. But, the public was not that comfortable with DeGeneres’s new confession and ceased to view her sitcom and respect her as a comedian.. This loss of an audience caused a downward spiral of cancellations of her shows and the discontinuation of jobs for DeGeneres. In this slump of her life she did not shut down. Instead, she got back on her feet and showed the world that it is okay to be gay; she held true to her personality and values and people started to watch her again. Her popularity began to skyrocket and her personality became her signature she left wherever she went. So why is Ellen DeGeneres so popular among the people? Based on the information provided above it is undeniable that the life and values of Ellen DeGeneres have shaped her into to the inspiring and influential person she is and will continue to be. Ellen DeGeneres will
The 1990s saw surge of gay characters in both television and movies. From Ellen Degeneres and her character Ellen Morgan coming out under much scrutiny on the TV show ‘Ellen,’ to Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett comedically playing off each other in the motion picture ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding.’ Sure, gays and lesbians have been around forever, especially in Hollywood. But never has there been a time to be more out. With the popularity of shows like Will and Grace, which feature leading gay characters, as well as Dawson’s Creek and it’s supporting character of teenager Jack McPhee, we are slowly seeing gay and lesbian characters creeping into the mainstream media.
Within the recent years, the transgender movement has become more apparent than ever. With television shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, “Keeping It Up With Cait” and “I Am Jazz”, the voices of transgender people are more public than ever. Celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverene Cox are changing the face of the movement by showing people that it is never too late to be their true selves. American laws acknowledge the rights of transgender people, but not in a positive way. These are just people trying to be their best selves.
