DISCUSS ELIZABETH'S REACTION TO JOHN'S INFIDELITY. IS SHE BEING UNREASONABLE? Elizabeth Proctor, a wife, mother of 3, and faithful woman to not only god, but her husband. Elizabeth is certainly an admirable woman. Throughout the entire crucible she remains loyal to her husband and tries to do what is best for others. The start of the play the viewer is presented with a character (Elizabeth) as a housewife who has been sorely cheated on. Struggling to forgive and trust her husband. “Elizabeth: “You were alone with her?” (Abigail) (pg.59:10) she questions John and her grows frustrated he goes from wanting to make it up to her to telling her not to question him “Proctor- with a violent undertone: “ you doubt me yet?” Elizabeth- with a smile, to keep her dignity “John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? Elizabeth, an honest woman, lies to protect her unfaithful husband from his disloyal sin. “Danforth- “...Your wife, you say, is an honest woman.” Proctor-” in her life, sir, she have never lied.” (pg.114:4-5) however despite these words Elizabeth tarnishes her good name and lies about her husband's disloyalty unfortunately doing the opposite of its intention. “Danforth- “...Is your husband a lecher!” Elizabeth- faintly “No, sir.”
