Act 3 of the Crucible can only be described as crazy. Each character was fighting their own battle; Every one of them lost except for Reverend Parris. Revered Parris was struggling to keep his reputation and career alive. If the trials were to end fraudulently, Parris would be left with a lying daughter and niece. He is only trying to cover himself and make sure his social position is not lowered because of witchcraft in his house. I am not a fan of Reverend Parris. The next character who put up a fight was Elizabeth Proctor. Elizabeth is dealing with the consequences of the people around hers actions. Her husband cheated on her, Marry Waren gave her a doll that got her in trouble, she has been accused of witchcraft, and she is pregnant. Poor Elizabeth Proctor has done nothing to deserve this but continues to defend her husband after his adultery. I give her props for confessing but I still do not like her. Her reasoning in the following quote for not being able to faint is not very believable, “I-I cannot tell how, but I did. I-I heard the other girls screaming, and you, Your Honor, you seemed to believe them, and I- It were only sport in the beginning, sir, but then the whole world cried spirits, spirits, and I-I promise you, Mr. Danforth, I only thought I saw them but I did not.” (Miller 113). Marry Warren was one of the girls who put Elizabeth Proctor in jail for witchcraft. More specifically, it was the doll that Marry Warren gave Elizabeth that got her in trouble. I think she owed Proctor and his family a better explanation and the court a better testimony. All she seemed to do was cry while in court and give bad explanations for her
