Key Elements for Parents to Teach Kids to Become Successful In our generation, people try to find the ways to become a successful person. In the article “How Will You Measure Your Life?” by Dr. Clayton Christensen, he mentions about the guidelines that helped him to become successful including the significance of teaching children on an early age. Basically, parents are an essential factor to foster good things for their kids since they are young. Children’s brains are innocent so it is a good time to receive beneficial information for their future life. From the article by Dr. Christensen, he explains that he has seen many people that are unhappy as they have no clear goal of life which leads to a divorce or estrangement by their children. When people grow up, they have more responsibility. Consequently, parents should teach their kids to set their goals since they are young. For example, when they are doing homework, parents can ask them that what they can accomplish under limited period of time. This can lead children to think by themselves that what they want to be in the future. A purpose gives them direction what they actually need to achieve. As a result, they will focus on that part first. Moreover, it decreases possibility for children to lose track and misbehave. However, parents should not pressure them because it creates tension for children. Some people including adults do not have a clear objective in life that what they want to accomplish. Dr. Christensen explains that if people do not find a objective, “they will just sail off without a rudder and get buffeted in the very rough seas of life”. Besides, a goal can set Work-Life balance to allocate time for both family and work so that people will not have problems in future life. One of those cultures is self-esteem, according to Christensen. Parents should instill a kid’s thought about self-esteem. For instance, when children do something right, you should appreciate them or give rewards to make they have confidence and self-esteem. We considered self-esteem in two different perspectives which are self-respect and self-efficacy. Firstly, kids should have self-respect in themselves. Self-respect means a feeling of respect about yourself. To clarify, they believe that they are valuable and proud about themselves. Secondly, self-efficacy is a crucial part of self-esteem because self-efficacy refers to the beliefs of your enough ability to do things. For example, people claim that they are able to learn and understand things. Additionally, they can make decisions by themselves, face and solve the problems and be successful in life.
