Founded in the winter of 1978, Elegance Fashion is the University of Michigan’s first charity fashion show that was established in the effort to promote cultural expression in the face of many racial discriminatory acts and injustices against minority students. Till this very day, Elegance Fashion continues to actively challenge the status quo. Our mission is to break down societal stereotypes with an annual show, in which, all proceeds will go to a charitable cause and participating students are given the opportunity to display our campus diversity to the public. In the article, “The Fashion Industry: Free to Be an Individual” by Hanna Berry, Berry discusses how for decades women have been told to use certain products and that if they used those products they would be beautiful. Women over the years have believed this idea and would purchase items that promised to make them prettier, thinner, smarter and even more loved. However, in reality it was never what they wore on their bodies that helped them be any of those things; but what it did help with was to empower women to become fearless and bold by what they chose to wear on their bodies as a form of expression.

In the 19th century play, FASHION, Anna Mowatt develops the character plot as a contrast and comparison between being “natural” and “artificial in a world becoming preoccupied with fashion, and being fashionable. In the head notes, it was stated that Daniel Havens said FASHION is “the ugly image of the American Dream gone sour.” (Watt and Richardson) Fashion has a complex definition. The word ‘fashion’ can mean anything from the type of clothes you wear, how you communicate with others, the place you live, how you present yourself, or who you associate yourself with. In FASHION, Mowatt took a comical yet sober look at the definitions of “fashion,” applied it to real life in 1845, and through her characters, provides a mirror with which an audience/reader can evaluate themselves. I do not believe updating this play would be difficult because America has continued down the fast and destructive path in an effort to keep up with the “fashions” of the day.
Throughout history, there were many things that influenced fashion and the ideal body image of the time. Things such as politics, and changes in social roles were some things that had an influence on the fashion of the day. One particular shocking thing that had influenced on the fashion around the 1800s were sickness and diseases. Not only were diseases and sickness caused by different fashion trends, but it set the tone for certain ideal body images and also influenced the fashion of the time.
The aim of these collections is the attempt to de-emphasize biological differences between genders. And with the absence of gender markings, clothes are devoid of sexuality. We could take David Robert Jones, known as David Bowie, who was an English singer and actor, as an example; looking back his androgynous appearance seemed very radical but today he is still an icon of how two genders can exist in one personality. Bowie expressed his personality and identity not only through the way of living, but also through the way of dressing. Jo B. Paoletti, professor of American Studies at the University of Maryland in College Park, where she teaches courses related to everyday life, including fashion, claims “Fashion, you see, is in the mind. You have to think differently before you can dress differently. By changing their clothes, people risk changing their whole lives and they are frightened. “(2015: 68) This quote one more time proves the idea which goes through ages- there is a great importance of fashion in expressing one’s status, beliefs and sexuality. A lot of famous designers around the world create unisex or hybrid clothes in 2016, for instance such company as Burberry, with a chief creative officer, Christopher Baily, has presented spring/summer collection of androgynous clothing. The fact that one of the most influential fashion developers creates such clothes shows the popularity of gender- neutral dressing at present. Another example of gender- neutral collection that I would like to give is Zara. Zara is a Spanish clothing and accessories retailer based in Arteixo, Galicia. The company was founded in 1975 by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera. Its main aim from the day of establishment has been to reach out for so-called ‘common-people’, who cannot afford designers’ clothes, but wish to dress fashionably. The Renaissance time period started in the late 14th century and it lasted all through the 16th century. This was also the period where the word “European” was put in use and understood by other places, and the word “Renascrere” originated from the Italian word “Renascrere” and it meant to be re-born. Many people would not believe that there are so many similarities between modern day fashion and the fashion of the renaissance time period. Many differences may be seen between the two, but the similarities are remarkable. Throughout all of time, clothing has been the major representation of social classes. What people wear has always been the distinguishing factor between the wealthy and the poor classes of both the renaissance and current time period. The evolution from time period to time period has been vast, but the fact that what people wear represents what class they reside in is still very prevalent. From the fabrics, jewels, and accessories, you can still see many similarities from the renaissance time period to the current time period. “…much of what we know about historical dress comes from the apparel of the elite.” (Sauro) Although much time has progressed, fashion from the renaissance period has held a strong influence on the fashion in today’s society.

Introduction Historically, multiple styles of dressing have been created during the last several decades, which played an important role in modern fashion in the UK. Everyone has a different and unique dressing style in their everyday life. Some styles are influenced by vintage styles which are attributing to the deep effects of old vogue, and another group of dressing styles are inclined into the fresh element. Despite those different styles, some of them have even evolved into the milestones in fashion history. To start this essay, it will introduce the evaluation of the first significant revolution of dressing style in the 1960s.
Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
Clothes was always my specialty. I guess that’s why I believe in playing dress up. I love how certain colors goes perfectly together and other colors could be a major fashion statement. That could also explain my shopping addiction. That fuzzy feeling of getting an 20%, 30%, or 60% email from your favorite stores screaming that it is a huge sale.
