(AGG) Nusrat, who originally was called Elaine, has grown in many ways throughout the novel. (BS-1) Nusrat started out being Elaine, who wanted to be alone and who disconnected from everyone and everything. (BS-2) Dr. Faiz was the first real connection she had and this relationship made her grow farther apart from her parents. (BS-3) In the end, Nusrat wants to reconnect with her parents because she’s been through the same experiences they have gone through. (TS) Elaine was affected by Margaret’s death which caused her to disconnect from her family and faith, Faiz helped her find new faith which helped her regain her voice and become who she is. “All Elaine wanted was for Margaret to get better, and when that didn't happen she decided she’d rather keep to herself” (53). Elaine wanted to be alone. Margaret was one of her best friends and her sister. Once she died, Elaine disconnected from everything and would play by herself instead of with the other kids. (STEWE-2) Elaine’s mother would always try to force friendships on her so that someone might be able to connect with her. “Elaine was angry with her mother for trying to force friendships on her” (53). Elaine didn’t want friends and she was very sad. Her family wanted to try to make Margaret getting sick and dying easier on Elaine, but she didn’t want to be forced into any friendship. “But Elaine felt no connection to the world in which she grew up” (122). She didn’t feel connection to her family, or the religion her whole family was. (STEWE-2) Elaine didn’t feel like she had any meaning and did not believe in the God of her childhood. “After her sister’s death Elaine began a quest for meaning. She could not accept that the God of her childhood would take her little sister” (134). She believed that if the God of her childhood was real, he would not have taken her sister away from their family. Elaine felt like she did not have a meaning in this world and she was looking for one. (CS) Elaine disconnected from many things about her childhood due to her sister’s death. (MIP-2) The first person that really had gotten to know Elaine was Dr. Faiz and it was the first real connection that anyone had with Elaine after Margaret which drove her further away from her parents. (SIP-A) Nusrat wanted a new religion that she could believe in and made sense to her. (STEWE-1)Elaine was a young american living in New York. She met Faiz shortly after her apartment was robbed.
