If we want peace we need to work for justice, this is a basis for Catholicism. As Catholics and sinners we are taught to strive to reach the kingdom of God, where we will reach eternal life and assurance. Prophets were inspired by Jesus by challenging the officials of Jerusalem so the poor and vulnerable could obtain justice and peace. Oscar Romero followed the path of Jesus by speaking by speaking out about injustices in El Salvador. Romero confronted the government and military in El Salvador by standing up for those being persecuted. When Romero was announced archbishop he experienced a great amount of struggles, but then he realized the true struggles and injustices were surrounding El Salvadoran people so he responded to those with empathy and care. …show more content…
Justice is the treatment of people with concern and respect, based off the establishment of loving relationships among human beings. Justice can be experienced when people are treated fair in their dealings with quality and respect. Justice works to change injustices through moral rightness, ethics and public or group actions. Another aspect that comes along with justice is social justice. Social justice is how people are treated as a whole and fairly in society. For example, Archbishop Romero brought upon justice by preaching about human rights violations in El Salvador. Another concept we examined in unit one was suffering. Suffering is based off of undergoing pain or hardship. When undergoing suffering we can either choose to do something or nothing about it. Suffering typically occurs when injustices occurs. If we choose to respond to our suffering we can respond in four ways. The first response is hopelessness, which is when one believes there is no possibility for a change or anything to get better. Many people unlike Romero chose not to speak about the injustices in El Salvador as they thought there
Juan saw injustice as he perceived it, and so with only two friends and all of the bravery he could possibly muster, he set off on a journey that not only defied the laws of their own government but ours as well. Together, they overcame some challenges, only to be hurt in the most gruesome ways. Often, the price of non-conformity is so minor to us at first glance, that a great deal of individuals think it is a simple matter: “Do I d...
Chavez begins by recalling the power of nonviolence as demonstrated by Dr. King, who lived and taught essential ingredients for active nonviolence until the day he died. By alluding to Dr. King, Chavez is able
The texts “Scales Of Justice” and “Gattaca” are two texts which allow the reader to witness a variety of interpretations and explore the relevant issues that are visible within contemporary society. Such issues as corruption within the police force, racism, sexual harassment, discrimination and manipulation of power are shown to give different interpretations of issues which plague today’s society and potentially our future.
Discuss the ideas developed by the text creator about the role self-respect plays when an individual responds to injustice.
Since we are made as free moral agents with the ability to choose the standards by which we will live some in society determine their right and wrong behavior based on their feelings of particular situations. For example, a person who grew up in a culture that is less fortunate than others and steals for survival might feel he hasn’t done anything wrong. However, this type of behavior is not acceptable in our society because it violates our obligation to be obedient to the law, not to mention the disadvantage of consequences one faces for their decisions. The advantage to displaying moral character by far out weights the consequences in that choosing to do right creates fairness by way of harmony. Of course, justice requires that victims are compensated for the wrong done to them, and anyone committs a crime must bear the ...
Justice is described as “a moral concept that is difficult to define, but in essence it means to treat people in ways consistent with
In the movie Romero, Archbishop Romero changes very much in his understanding of love and in his understanding of true conscience. At first Romero is just a priest who isn’t really concerned about the poor and how they are being oppressed, but when Romero is chosen to be the new Archbishop his friend, who is assassinated, I think has a slight impact on him. But I think when his friend is assassinated is when he really starts to realize what is happening to the country of El Salvador and how the government doesn’t want anyone to speak out about this. So, now Romero is starting to action against the government and tries to speak out against them. Here we see Archbishop Romero’s true conscience and love grow for the people around him because we see him taking more action against the government. I think that Archbishop Romero defines love as helping others who are in need and others who need his help whatever it may be. We see Romero do this when he starts to lead the revolt in trying to tell the El Salvadoran Government to stop oppressing the poor and treat everyone as human beings. I think Romero has to make a very big decision considering, the gorillas were sending out flyers that said “Be a Patriot, Kill a Priest”. The decision that Romero had to make was whether or not to help the poor or just be a puppet for the cardinals that selected him to be a puppet in the beginning. I think the thing that made Romero choose to help out the poor was the love he had for them. I also be...
Social Justice is equality and fairness for all human beings. It is the subject of many official Catholic teachings and Catholics Organisation. To understand the reasons for the compassion and love by Catholics seeking peace and justice for all humanity, it is important to examine a specific example of human injustice in the world today.
In The Challenge of Peace, catholic bishops state “Catholic teaching has always understood peace in positive terms. In the words of Pope John Paul II: "Peace is not just the absence of war . . .. Like a cathedral, peace must be constructed patiently and with unshakable faith." The first article mention John Paul II “War never again”. We could be at peace but a political war can still be
“Romero’s shirt,” is a story about a man –the protagonist, who takes pride in his work and the possessions he has acquired through his hard work. Romero is confined by his hard work and the need to provide for his family. While washing his car, Romero is approached by a man of distinct character, such as Romero before he came to El Paso. Thrown by the man’s personality, Romero lets his guard down and gives the man a small odd job. When the job is done Romero takes a nap and quickly realizes he left his favorite shirt outside. Unable to find his shirt, Romero automatically assumes that the old man has taken advantage of him by taking his food, money and his shirt. This in return leaves Romero feeling disappointed and taken advantage of.
Often, a person is seen as the embodiment of the value of their action, thus a person can be seen as “good” or “bad,” and the consequences of justice that affect them are based on the general value of their general actions. The value given to actions is based on a soc...

According to Pojman (2006), justice is the constant and perpetual will to give every man his due. This would seem to imply that for justice to be carried out, people must get what they deserve. But there is some debate over what being just entails; to be just is to be fair, but is being fair truly to give people what they deserve? In this essay, I will detail why justice requires that people are given what they deserve through the scope of punishment, reward, and need.
Thomas Pain and Naomi Shihab Nye try in their protest literature to free their people days from the dark while whispering in their audience(s) mind the belief that if they today fight against the injustice which they are facing, they someday will all be able to look back at their life and wish that everyone could have had a life as fun as theirs because, they all as one by believing in injustice as not being source of as much proudness and happiness as their love for justice, they will all be able to reach in their hearts, and whole being the infinite limit of peace, justice and happiness and so will be at the same time, be able to exterminate the most hazardous and appalling human creation in the nature of injustice.
The New Testament speaks of two kinds of peace, objective peace that has to do
