Effeminacy is a prominent theme in Chinua Achibe’s novel Things Fall Apart from start to finish. Okonkwo is the hyper-masculine protagonist of the story who spends his days trying to be the opposite of his father, Unoka, whom he despises. Unoka “was in fact a coward who could not bear the sight of blood” (p. 77) and who owed numerous people in Umuofia an ample amount of cowries. He was seen by the Igbo people of Umuofia as irresponsible and lazy, and, in the eyes of Okonkwo, extremely effeminate. “Unuoka, the grown up, was a failure. He was poor and his wife and children had barely enough to eat.” (p. 57) And for these reasons Okonkwo became fixated with proving his worth to the Igbo people.
