Effects that Identity Crisis Causes on Society

In today’s world, society stresses a lot of value on materialistic things. Whether it is the newest electronic gadget, or the latest trend of fashion; somebody somewhere is buying it. This materialistic idea is very evident during the holiday season when thousands of shoppers are standing outside in the cold for the latest trend. But, society’s materialistic ideology can sometimes be misconstrued with true self-identity. Meaning that society often times define their self-worth by what they own instead of by the content of their character. When this ideology is taken place, it brings about negative effects on society. Furthermore, the humanistic character of society becomes tainted. If this identity crisis is not resolved, then the next generation of society will be lost without a cause.
There are negative effects that identity crisis causes on society. Some of the negative effects that come from materialistic ideology are stereotyping and prejudging. Society stereotype other people who do not have the latest name brand clothes or whatever maybe the latest gadgets in electronics. When this is done they tend to put those people in social class as being in a low class, because not having these things to society makes the people seem like they are not as wealthy as those who do seem to have the latest things. With having society judging the people in the world who may be less fortunate than others, it makes those who are less fortunate fell as if they are not as important as those who do have all the nice and latest things. So, this makes people feel that there is something wrong with being in touch with their inner person. It would not fair for the next generation of society to be uneducated about true self-worth. Furthermore, society should display positive messages about self-acceptance through the media. For example, make more positive commercials about being true to yourself, and also, how material things do no always bring out the trueness in who you really are. It is okay for people to be themselves regardless of what the world would have to say. The next generation should not be punished for not understanding how to be themselves and understand their true identities. For that to happen it is up to this generation now to put a stop to this and help build a better foundation for them and let them know that it is ok to who they are. It is time for a change.
