Effects of Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy
Throughout the years of my life, I have had to deal with people that I love dearly suffer from cancer. When I was 10 years old, I lost my father to cancer. It was a devastating blow to my life, even though I was young and didn’t really understand what was going on, the impact that it played made on me, made me think what was the point of living. As time went on many people that played a special role in my life died of cancer, and many survived and fought the dangerous disease. Just a year ago, another person to me that meant the world to me told me that they had cancer, and that was my mother. The first thing I thought, death, and how was I going to cope with it. My mother always taught me to think positive before negative, but the word cancer makes you think of death being the fact that it’s a deadly disease. Eventually my mother overcame the disease and is doing well, despite some things that she can’t do anymore due to the effects of radiation. Radiation has not changed my mother at all, but it has made her a wiser person, and she is not ashamed to tell anyone her story.
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cancer is caused by both external and internal factors. “More than 175,000 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 1999 and approximately 44,000 died of the disease” (Kasper and Ferguson 1). Many people with diets that include a high-level of fruits, vegetables, and fiber may lower the occurrence of some forms of cancer. “Statistically about 547, 000 people will die of cancer” (Cook 5). This is nearly 1, 500 people will die per day. “In the United States, brea...

Family is a good source to turn to talk about your feelings, and how to cope with the issues your facing. In addition to family, religion is strength for a person to turn to.
“There has been a steady rise in the cancer mortality rate in the United States in the last half-century” (Cook 5). The future of cancer has nowhere to go but up. With all the treatments that helped people overcome the dangerous disease, there will never be a cure for cancer, and if there is than we’ll just be in suspense. Many people survive and beat the disease, but 1 out of every 10 people that beat the disease, will experience the disease again, maybe in the same form, but often in a more serious stage.
Cancer is a deadly disease that millions of people die from a year. Many loved ones are killed with little to no warning affecting families across our world. My family happened to be one that was affected by this atrocious disease. This event changed the way my family members and I viewed cancer.
Unfortunately, the quality of health care in America is flawed. Information technology (IT) offers the potential to address the industry’s most pressing dilemmas: care fragmentation, medical errors, and rising costs. The leading example of this is the electronic health record (EHR). An EHR, as explained by HealthIT.gov (n.d.), is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart. It includes, but is not limited to, medical history, diagnoses, medications, and treatment plans. The EHR, then, serves as a resource that aids clinicians in decision-making by providing comprehensive patient information.
The federal government has taken deliberate steps to ensure that EHR systems are strong, secure, and able to communicate with each other. “Certification” is a way to enforce standards. Hospitals, doctors and other eligible practitioners can earn incentive fees under the meaningful use program, by adopting certain standards and earning certification. EHRs are certified after passing tests of their functionality, reliability, security, and compliance with the standards. Certification provides assurance to purchasers and other users that an EHR system offers the necessary technological capability, functionality, and security to help them meet the meaningful use criteria established. Providers and patients must also be confident that the EHR systems they use are secured, can maintain data confidentiality, and can work with other systems to share information. Certification of EHR systems is an important step in ensuring that meaningful use requirements are met and that the benefit of improved patient care is realized.
The Meaningful Use includes the implementation of EHR in three Stages and is mainly focused on using EHR as a new healthcare technology that is used to promote health information exchange and resulting in improved outcomes in patient care. This benefited both the providers as well as the patients.
...tiple times that they succeeded in getting Rasheed to stop. They were willing to fight back despite the consequences and the fact that they knew Rasheed could bring out so much more anger. Even after attempting to run away and being beaten so badly, they both still showed their bravery. They were on the edge of death, but they still fought every day to stay alive. Mariam shows amazing inner strength when a loved one is involved. Sadness and evil are two things that are very evident in their lives, enough to cause anyone to lose hope in humanity. But, Mariam and Laila are both able to stand up to violence in order to find their courage, inner strength, and even happiness in the end. Life in Afghanistan has always been hard for women, but just like Mariam, women are able to take on these obstacles and overcome them, helping to make the world a safer place for others.
One of the most persistent stereotypes of (dis)Abled individuals is that they are evil or villainous and as such are predisposed to criminality due to some type impairment. Nothing is farthest from the truth.. Although, people with intellectual disorders and mental health issues are a growing population within the criminal justice system, they are still more often than not victims of crime as a result of their circumstances. People with developmental and cognitive impairments or significant mental health issues in many cases lack impulse control or display inappropriate emotions that the criminal justice system may misinterpret, thus bringing criminal charges for such offenses as causing a disturbance or mischief. When the police are confronted with a situation that involves a cognitively impaired or mentally ill person the police do not know how to respond in an appropriate manner. This image is seen throughout the media over the past few years. One has to look at the tragic death of Sammy Yatim or Michael Eligon to see these image.
Unfortunately her family only attempted to leave when, “...a giant roar. Behind her, a flash of white...Something hot and powerful slammed into her from behind”(Khaled Hosseini). A rocket struck Laila’s house killing both of her parents which we inside and severely wounding her. As Laila fades out of consciousness she see’s the figures of her neighbors, Mariam and Rasheed, coming to her assistance. She later figures out how her parents were no longer living, and ultimately feels alone because Tariq is gone as well. Viewing her current circumstance she sees no other positive choice for herself except marrying Rasheed and becoming his second wife alongside Mariam, “ ‘He wants an answer by his morning,’...‘He can have it now,...My answer is yes’ ”(Khaled Hosseini). With the situation that Laila was in and the way that her society did not approve of women living singly, marrying Rasheed was honestly the only choice she could
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, more commonly referred to as simply ADHD, is the most commonly diagnosed disorder among American children today. According to the National Institute on Mental Health an estimated 3 to 5 percent of school age children are affected by this disorder. (1) There are more diagnosed cases of ADHD of in the United States than there are anywhere in the world. The main symptoms of ADHD include "developmentally inappropriate levels of attention, concentration, activity, distractibility, and impulsivity." (1) While the number of people diagnosed with ADHD increases dramatically every year, there is still much about the disorder that is not understood. While scientists have deduced that ADHD originates in the brain, they still have many questions about the nature of it. The classification of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has become quite a controversial topic in American society today. There are some who believe that by recognizing the symptoms associated with the disorder as ADHD; science is simply putting a band-aid on a problem that could be otherwise corrected with behavior modification.
From start to finish, one could see how much Mariam values Laila, Aziza, and their friendship. The first example is when Mariam vows to help Laila while they are in the hospital for Laila’s unborn child: “I’ll get you seen, Laila jo. I promise” (287). This simple promise is a deep portrayal of Mariam’s desire to help Laila find a doctor and deliver her baby. Additionally, one can see Mariam’s love for Laila when she protects her from Rasheed’s grip of death, “‘Rasheed.’ He looked up. Mariam swung. She hit him across the temple. The blow knocked him off Laila” (348). Rasheed was going to kill Laila, but Mariam steps in and knocks him off of her with a shovel to save her life. Mariam forms a tight-knit bond with Laila, and when Hosseini includes their relationship, one can see how Mariam values Laila enough to kill another man. The author also describes their relationship after Mariam and Laila discuss plans for leaving: “When they do, they’ll find you as guilty as me. Tariq too. I won’t have the two of you living on the run like fugitives.” … “Laila crawled to her and again put her head on Mariam’s lap. She remembered all the afternoons they’d spent together, braiding each other’s hair, Mariam listening patiently to her random thoughts and ordinary stories with an air of gratitude, with the expression of a person to whom a unique and coveted privilege had been extended” (358). The love Mariam has for
Abstract: This research paper describes ADHD and the treatments available. It discusses the different medications and their side effects and explains the opinions of some doctors for an alternative treatment. The main goal of the writing is to shed some light on the disorder and describe some theories about ADHD. This goal is stated in the thesis which talks about how ADHD cannot be identified exactly, the side effects to the medication are harsh, there are different alternative treatments, and research shows it may be caused from hormones and sleep deprivation.
The Meaningful Use Incentive program was designed to ensure that EHRs are implemented and used in the appropriate manner by increasing healthcare quality while lowering healthcare costs. However, it is important to discern if the Meaningful Use incentive program is working appropriately because in 2015, if Medicare eligible providers (EPs) do not switch to EHRs, they will be penalized by reducing their fee schedule by 1.5% and by 2% for subsequent years (CMS, 2014). On a broader note, this topic is also important for healthcare administrators that have not yet invested in an EHR because if the Meaningful Use Incentive Program works in such a way that reduces cost and improves patient care, the implementation of an EHR should do the same as long as the MU program is followed. Furthermore, provi...
Cancer is a deadly disease that has some very serious effects on a person both physically and mentally. Cancer can result in a simple surgery that may take only a couple days, or a life-long struggle that leaves someone so fatigued and tired that it makes them want to give up. It will put fear in anyone's eyes and will devastate even the strongest of people, but cancer can bring out the courageousness in a person to fight this disease and not give up. It can be a fatal disease but it can also bring out the strength in someone which is an amazing thing. Cancer has many serious effects on a person's body and their mental health and others, but can also inspire a person to dig deep and fight this disease with all their heart.

It enables healthcare organizations to monitor patient safely and care. According to IOM essential elements for an EHR are: the collection of longitudinal data on a person’s health, immediate electronic access to this information, establishment of a system that provides decision support to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of patient care. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, until 2015, offers incentives for physicians and other healthcare professions to adopt health IT. After that, the apt spells out penalties for noncompliance of health IT. The Office of Nation Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology (HIT) is responsible for implementing the incentives and penalties program. The ONC has been working to create ‘meaningful use’ guidelines for physicians and others that will help them receive incentive payments and avoid penalties in the future” (Niles, 2015, page 261).
Over the past five years, numerous legislative acts have fundamentally changed the way the country thinks about healthcare. Nowhere have the changes been felt more than for those delivering care. However, often providers do not stop and consider how the changes affect patients, which is unfortunate as patient acceptance and participation in their healthcare can improve outcomes. Murphy (2011) concurred that healthcare should revolve around the patient rather than the patient treated as a passive participant. Her viewpoint extended to implementing health information technology (HIT) that is patient-centric and collaborative in helping patients become a full partner in their preventative self-care and disease management.
