The media have been one of the most controversial five-letter words of all times. Caribbean people who utilize media often formulate several opinions about the media’s intention but only a few deeply understand “the business of media”. Print, radio, local broadcast television and telecommunications; cable television and internet are the types of media that are commonly used in the region. Therefore, “media often reduce to mere commodities for sale to the highest bidder” (Baran, 2015; p 4) is a phrase that corroborates the psychological effect of these media on consumers’ spending power. During the Christmas season; which begins as soon as the latter part of November, media put forward thousands of advertisements about “tis the season to be jolly” but by observation it’s like more “tis the season to spend all your money”. Overtime, Christmas has become “forty-percent religious” and “sixty-percent commercialized. In the Caribbean, people gather by the thousands in malls and plazas in search of “the best-looking” spreads, curtains, drapes and table cloths, supermarkets flocked with “ham lovers” and people seeking ingredients for the “feast of the year”, haberdasheries selling “Christmas” gifts, decorations and house wares, markets flustered with shoppers seeking sorrel and gungo peas, clothes and shoe stores packed with consumer seeking “Christmas clothes” and last but not least paint shops have to be prepared for “the urgent need” for paints . Of course, goods and service prices increase at Christmas but “the highest bidders” know remittances, partner draws and pay bonuses are forthcoming.
