We live in the digital age. Technology and internet access is widespread. Digital devices play an integral role in our everyday lives. It has become a staple of households, businesses and organizations, so much so it has been marked as a necessity, nut a luxury. The ability to access this technology comes down to a number of different variables.
Digital Darwinism is the study of the causes and effects due to adaptations with the rise of technology in our society. Smart phones, social media, and computers, are all part of a growing market in technology available to the public. Over the course of the past two decades, this rise in technology has drastically changed how we live, work and interact.

Our success relies on this truth. The use of outdated computer or cell phones creates the risk of falling behind. The ability to afford and understand new devices creates an evolutionary advantage. Staying at odds with the quick pace of society requires a higher use of this tactic. Those with the ability to afford, obtain and understand new technology with find a greater chance of success in in a modern world. A world that relies on technology to move forward, relies on a society whom will comprehend it.
This ability to afford and access new technology creates new weakness. The Digital Divide is the economic and social inequality regarding access to, use of, or impact of technology. There are several contributing components to this divide.
Accessibility is the core of technological success. First, who has access plays a major role. Individuals, organizations, enterprises, schools, hospitals and even countries have different levels of disposable income, therefore different access. In addition to income, education, age, geographic location, and motivation are all key characteristics. An individual 's motivation to use the technology will have a massive effect on how well the devices will be utilized. Smartphones have bridged the gap in the intellectual divide. Internet access is available to the disadvantaged. Young adults, minorities, low income households, and those with no college experience, are more likely to access the internet primarily through smartphones. Internet access does not discriminate. With the digital age, individuals have the opportunity to learn and access more information than ever before.
Digital equity is the promotion of access to fair technology and training of its usage. Public schools, non-profits, lower income neighborhoods, rural areas, and uneducated individuals all partake in this mission. Craig Watkins discusses the different ways that digital media affects the learning divide between middle and low-class students and also students of different races, ethnicities and cultures. Watkins’ purpose in writing this essay is to show how mobile phones are closing the learning divide as well as the digital divide. He uses facts and research that he has gathered as a member of the MacArthur Foundation’s research network on Connected Learning to back up his statements and improve his credibility as an author.
With the decrease in cost, computers are becoming easier for low income families to own, and gain technological skills that they may have not once been able to acquire. “In 1997 only 37 percent of households with incomes from $15,000 to $24,999 used computers at home or at work,” says Samuelson. That number grew to 47 percent in just four years, while during the same years; usage among families with incomes over $75,000 rose only 7 percent, from 81 percent to 88 percent. A fear that came from the idea of the digital divide was that low wage earners would not be able to purchase a computer or gain the computer skills needed to be competitive in the job market and their children would also suffer from a disadvantage. Samuelson’s data shows otherwise, the amount of computers in homes is actually greater among lower earners than higher earners. Just exactly what is “Digital Divide?” The digital divide refers to the fact that certain parts of the population have significantly better opportunities to benefit from the new economy than other parts of the population. When we discuss the usage of “computing devices”, the internet and the World Wide Web, we do not think about the individuals who lack any of these devices technology has provided the majority of population for everyday use. There is a considerable gap in the number of individuals able to access the internet and gather information, pay bills, socialize, conduct banking needs, and purchases. These are basic functions people use every day that others cannot.
Post-modernism can be classified as a late-20th-century movement regarding the style and concept of many areas in life such as arts, architecture, culture, literature, philosophy, history and economics. It is generally a representation of a departure from modernism and at its core is a distrust of grand theories and ideologies, as well as a problematical relationship with any form of “art”. It usually features a deliberate mixing of different artistic styles and media, the self-conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, and often the incorporation of images relating to the consumerism and mass communication of the last-20th-century post-industrial movement (Oxforddictionaries.com, 2014). The paradigm shift after the Post-modernist times can be called the “Digital Age” or sometimes also known as the “Information Age”, or “New Media Age”. This is the period in human history where there was a move away from the traditional industry, which was brought about through industrialization, to an economy based on information computerization. The onset of the Digital Age is associated with the Digital Revolution just as the Industrial Revolution marked the onset of the Post-Modernist age (Wikipedia, 2014). While there is still definitely parts of the Post-Modernist era that still affect us daily, it is clear that there is a rise of a Digital Culture which is taking the world by storm.
Over the last decade, we have witnessed technology develop from being something we were just becoming familiar with and slowly embracing, to what it has become now. Contemporary people now have a dependence on being able to communicate with our friends and colleagues wherever and whenever we need to, being able to access and share media on any device, and being able to work on the go and collaborate your ideas and documents with people across the globe. Technology has become truly invaluable to the modern world, and without it the world would suffer from drastic social and economic consequences.
Technology surrounds almost everyone in today 's modern society. Technology is constantly changing, and advancing to make our everyday lives somewhat easier. Throughout history, people have looked for better ways to meet their needs and satisfy expectations. Technology has helped people out in many ways, such as: healthcare, education, jobs, and online shopping. Almost all goods and services rely on technology. The world is getting smaller, yet remains full of possibilities due in part to technology. Interestingly, the very first emails could only be sent to someone using two computers, literally side by side. Technology dates back to the first manipulations of materials to assist in human survival. There are many definitions for technology, John D. Carl describes technology stating,” it deals with the creation, use, and application of knowledge and its’ interrelation with life, society, and the environment” (Carl, J.D., 2011, p.301). For the purpose of this paper, any instrument, invention, or method influencing and allowing people to control or adapt to their environment, is technology. With the increased availability of technological tools (smart phones, text messaging, image scanning, email, and social media), communication is rapidly changing. Society has moved beyond the Industrial Age and into the Information Age, where the sharing of knowledge and ideas is the new driver of power and world economy. Technology possesses many merits, and as with any tool, it carries drawbacks. Misuse and overuse creates unsavory dependence. This dependence can have adverse affects on people, business, and education. Technology receives vast criticism for reducing face-to-face interactions. Although the information technology of today is widely held as impersonal, it promotes communication; technology reduces costs and leverages productivity by facilitating access to information and knowledge, and augmenting interaction amongst those who utilize technology.
In summary, the Digital Divide is real and has placed a severe gap between certain groups of people in the American culture. The Land of Opportunity is not necessarily made available to all. In her CNet article, Sonia Arrison (2002), provides a unique perspective as to the reason behind the gap. “The digital divide is not a crisis, and it is certainly not the civil liberties issue of the 21st century. The real issues are the sorry state of education and the push to raise the taxes that affect lower income families most” (Arrison, 2002). Arrison states that if the Government could improve the education in the American schools and stop luxury taxes on so many services, the Digital Divide could easily be narrowed. By narrowing the divide, more families could afford Internet if so desired, and students could have access to a better education.

Technology has make our life more productive in many different ways. One of the greatest invention is Apple’s products. It leads an evolution of tablet devices.
