Effective Delegation and Task Completion Delegation is the process through which complex organizations achieve desired objectives through allocation of authority and responsibility to personnel (Grohar-Murray & Langan, 2011, p. 170). Responsibility cannot be delegated without the needed authority to get a particular task completed. Effective delegation result when assigned tasks are completed or intended results are achieved and rule of delegation are followed. Being a new nursing the art of delegation is one key nursing skill that poses a challenge to me. It has been my personal philosophy to be the best at anything I do with little or no help from anyone else. The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) joint statement on delegation asserts that to delegate effectively the registered nurse uses critical thinking and professional judgment to ensure that the “Five Rights of Delegation” are met before a task can be effectively delegated. Thus the right task should be delegated under the right circumstances to the right person; with the right directions and communication and under the right supervision and evaluation (Delegation, n.d.). The plan also entails taking a minute to quickly run through a checklist of the five right of delegation before delegating a task. Data was collected on the minute spent to review the five rights of delegation. Also data was collected on whether tasks were completed or not completed. In the first week, January 11-17, delegated assignments were completed but time was not spent to review the checklist before tasks were delegated. During the second week, January 18-24, all delegated assignments were fully completed and the one minute delegation checklist was adhered to with each delegated assignment. Daily data collection continued into the third week, January 25-31. Delegated assignments in the first two days were duly and fully completed however the one minute delegation checklist was not performed. On the last work day of week three, the one minuet checklist was done and all however the delegated task was partially completed. During week four February 1-7 all delegated assignments were completed on all work days even though the one minute delegations checklist was never done for any of the delegated tasks. In the last week of data collection, February 8-14, there was revert to the initial plan after a deviation from the plan in the previous week. During the fifth week, the one minute delegation checklist was consistently followed and all delegated assignments were fully and timely
