Introduction
Businesses today face many challenges that did not exist centuries ago. As opposed to before, now businesses face increased competition and continuous change in trends. In order to be successful, businesses need to try and be a step ahead of their competitors and look out for new ways of reaching their customers in their communications. Communication can be defined as the exchange of information between people, companies, or between people and companies (MEANS, 2010). In this modern era, communication is done in a variety of platforms. Traditionally, the television, radio broadcasts, phone calls, writing letters, newspaper, and magazines were the most common way of communication but things have certainly changed. Businesses are now looking for the most effective ways to communicate.
In the modern information age, businesses receive, process, and send a huge amount of messages every day. Effective communication is not just about exchanging information but also involves understanding the information. This combines a number of skills which include; attentive listening and nonverbal communication (GUFFEY, 2013). Effective communication in businesses leads to successful interactions between the company and the customers, and also between co-workers. Effective communication helps people better understand other people and situations, and also help people build respect, and trust, resolve their differences, improve teamwork, and helps people create environments that encourage problem solving skills and creative ideas (ROUSE, 2001). Lack of effective communication leads to misunderstandings that can cause conflicts and frustrations in professional and personal relationships.

With this technology, businesses need take advantage of the opportunity, push forward and try to be technologically minded and continuously incorporate the social media in more positive ways. Apart from communicating with customers, social networking sites offer businesses something that no other form of communication can offer, this is the ability to monitor the public perception to its goods, services, and brands in real time. As a result of this, companies have been able to provide effective and quick responses in cases where there is negative perception. Looking at the analysis in this paper, it is clear that social media is helping communication especially in businesses. Even highly regulated companies like Delloitte and USAA are now taking advantage of social media.
