The Pizza Effect and Global Religions
In the world today, it is incredibly difficult to preserve anything without letting outside influences and modernization to take effect. Culture and religion are not exempt from the impact the modern world has. According to the class lecture, the pizza effect is described as a phenomenon where part of a religion or culture is embraced somewhere other than where it originated and then re-established in the original culture or religion. The name of this effect comes from Italian migrants who brought their flat bread, pizza, to America with them, after it was a huge success with Americans their family members back in Italy readapted this new version of pizza with tomatoes, cheese, and other various toppings (Knott, 78). There are several examples of the pizza effect taking place within Indian religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism.
The first example has to do with Mohandas Gandhi and the epic, Bhagavad-Gita. When Gandhi traveled to London to study law, he still wanted to be around people who shared some of his...
In the book Playing for Pizza the story first took place in Cleveland where Rick Dockery was the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and then took place in Parma, Italy where he got hired to play quarterback after he got fired from the NFL because he blew a 17 point lead with 11 minutes to go against the Broncos in the AFC championship game. In Playing for Pizza the other uses various settings for the novel to be more realistic because they both are completely real places.
In a similar situation, Mahatma Gandhi’s father was not in his life either. Having died with Gandhi was only 16 years of age, Mahatma Gandhi lived his life with his mother as his only guardian (Mahatma Bio 1). Chris McCandless furthered his studies at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He received excellent grades, although viewing “titles and honors as immaterial and irrelevant” (Chris 1). Likewise, Mahatma Gandhi left his home in India to study law in London. (Mahatma Bio 1) Both men decided to receive an education past high school, something not many young men did. Chris McCandless also liked enjoyed traveling, starting from his home in California, to places such as Virginia, Alaska, Arizona, and South Dakota (Chris 1). Mahatma Gandhi also travelled after the birth of his son, exploring Durban in the South African state of Natal (Mahatma Bio 1). One of the biggest similarities between Chris McCandless and Mahatma Gandhi is the interest in South Africa culture, and issues

Food has been used as a tool by many cultures as movements to help with their culture become recognized, to identify their way of being, and to show their class and status. By exploring different author’s articles, and movie clips this will be visible. Food has created many cultures to explore these outlets and in return has had a positive impact on their culture.
...iance, readers are capable of seeing how citizens in the world today try to be independent of others and sustain their personal beliefs and philosophy. Individuals have to put an end to conformity and trying to be a duplication of everyone else because they will never achieve success if they never decide for themselves. A person must not rely on the judgment and minds of others and learn to think for him or herself since depending on others only exhibits a person’s inferiority to larger institutions. People must stop using travel as an excuse to evade personal problems because if they do not have a direct confrontation with the dilemma, trying to escape will only lengthen it. People in today’s society must appreciate this work so they will approve of their individuality and be stronger in fighting against everyone else that disagrees with their personal philosophy.
Food plays a very important role in every religion and culture. Good nutrition is a great symbol of healthy food/diet. In order to keep ourselves healthy, it is very important to watch what we are eating. Food habits come from parents, which later on developed according to the environment. Food is one of the ways where humans describe themselves as cultured. Food is the most significant segment of our lives. Different types of food explain verities of the belief that we have in all over the world. Ones’ food discipline and choice, tells about which culture/religion they belong to. Food, Religion,
The first example of this is when he decided to leave the Samanas and then later finds himself at the river. After he has left his life with the Samanas he says, “‘It is a beautiful river.’ he said to his companion. ‘Yes it is a very beautiful river. I love it above everything. I've often listened to it, gazed at it, and I have always learned something from it. One can learn much for my River” (48). This quote is important because this is when he decides to take his path into his own hands and this is when he first really notices the river. Another example of this is how he leaves his wealthy life and lives as the ferryman's apprentice till he becomes the Buddha. This quote gives an explanation about the time he spent with the Ferryman at the River, “As Vasuveda rose from the river bank, when he looked into Siddhartha’s eyes and saw the serenity of knowledge shining in them, he touched his shoulder gently in his kind protective way and said : ‘I have waited for this hour, my friend. Now that it has arrived, let me go. I have been Vasudeva, the ferryman, for a long time. Now that it is over. Farewell nut, farewell river, farewell Siddhartha” (136). This quote is crucial to the novel because it explains the ending and how Siddhartha becomes the
Most all religions (outside of indigenous cultures), exist in the modern world to stand and represent the accepted beliefs and ritualistic practices of the cultures from which they have either; merged with, adapted to, or are currently adapting to. Most models of religion must accept and deal with the challenge of answering some of today’s most ethical questions; often, having sprouted out from yesterday’s past. The permissible modernization that takes place throughout religion expresses both; the sincerity and focus of the people that follow their particular faith. Though at times, the attention of so many people can be misguided from unseen disasters or terroristic control and such; it is not uncommon for communities of similar cultures (usually
Albanese’s definition of religion that focuses on the social (community), the material (symbols), and the mythical (extraordinary) dimensions of religion best incorporates religions from all over the world. Western religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism fit easily into the mold that Albanese lays out, while practices such as Native American, African Diaspora, Chinese, and Japanese religions manage to squeeze into the mold in more obscure ways. Each of these religious practices contain elements of community, symbolism, and interaction with the extraordinary, from the Native American “dama” ritual to Christianity’s creation narrative to Daoism’s Yin-Yang symbol. Although religions from India, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, might be used as counter examples, these religious practices ultimately touch on each aspect of Albanese’s definition. Buddhism and Jainism still acknowledge supernatural forces even though they are not a main focus. Hinduism still is a community of believers even though they accept all religions to be a part of their own. With all this being said, Albanese’s definition of religion is just vague enough. By only focusing on three religious dimensions instead of all seven, all the religious traditions studied in this class can, in fact, be labeled
What is the best food to eat at 3 in the morning? It’s obviously pizza! But what toppings should go on top of the delicious pie is the real debate. When you hear people order "pineapple on pizza," they are either salivating in anticipation or gagging in disgust. The first time I heard about Hawaiian Pizza that includes pineapple on top, I cringed. When I saw it, I cringed harder, and when I first laid the doughy flatbread on my tongue, I cringed the hardest. As someone who loves pineapple and pizza separately and an avid food enthusiast, I know pizza. I have eaten plenty of pizzas before ranging from ordinary cheese to upscale vegan pizza. Pizza should be made with care, with love, and with delectable savory toppings selected with attentiveness. It is not meant to be randomly covered by a sugary tropical fruit.
People do not think about this often but deciding where and what one will eat is an everyday decision. Often, this decision is one of the most difficult to make specifically for students on campus.Unfortunately, Dixie State University does not have much to offer on campus for students who face this problem making other dilemmas difficult to manage. With that being said, Dixie State University should allow private food vendors to rent a space on campus to help facilitate time, variety, and convenience for students.
The social standing of food became very significant in the early modern Europe. In this period, food was not just a mere substance but was considered an indicator of social position and situation .
