Edward’s actions in the movie would distance him from society even if he didn’t have scissors for hands. Edward remains the same throughout the film; he does not overcome his awkwardness or shyness. He has uncommon talent among mediocrity, and his unexpected anger and stubbornness was what ultimately changed people's view of him. It is these traits that will make one an outsider, whether you have scissor hands or flesh and bone. In a suburb where everyone is loud and bursting with new gossip and stories, Edward’s introversion stands out. He is a man of few words, never expressing his thoughts or even introducing himself. The first words the audience hear from him are “Don't go” and “Not finished”. The rest of what we learn about him in that scene were inferred by Peg, the kindly Avon lady, or left to the imagination. Later, we learn of his attraction to Kim through his facial expressions but never directly with words. While this may be endearing to Kim, most people would regard it as creepy and Twilightesque. (Ironically, Edward shares his name with Edward Cullen.) His scissor hands were what made him a myth, but his shyness and air of mystery was what kept him as one. …show more content…
The suburbanites are all mediocre, talentless people. Peg is a door-to-door saleswoman, but an unsuccessful one. She was unable to sell a single product during the opening scene, and was unsuccessful in her attempts to hide Edward’s scars with make-up. This contrasts with how Edward was able to expertly create beautiful hedge sculptures with absolutely no training at all. On an unexpected request, Edward effortlessly moved from grooming dog hair to styling and cutting women’s hair, even being able to give everyone special and unique hairstyles. This talent, along with his abnormal hands, was able to get him on TV, marking him as the special one and keeping him as the outsider in this
Would you let a man with scissors for hands in your, that you found in a dark evil-looking castle? I know I wouldn’t, but a mom named Peg would. Peg, who is very empathetic, decides to go sell Avon to the evil mansion across the street, but then finds a boy with scissors for hands and decides to take him home. Edward seems to be doing fine in the community, but is soon seen as a monster because he is framed by a bully name Jim. The movie is Edward, the protagonist, trying to recuperate his innocence and he won’t stop until he does. Throughout the movie, director Tim Burton used the stylistic elements of juxtaposition and symbolism to show the character’s personalities and to show how some places in the story are opposites.
The film Edward Scissorhands shows how society rejects people who are different. This film directed by Tim Burton is about a boy named Edward who lives in an empty mansion. The film shows a community that is quick to judge but slow to distinguish the qualities of Edward. The people in the community are selfish and expect to receive from Edward without giving but regardless of this there are still some who love and care for him. By viewing this film the audience recognises how important it is to give someone a chance to prove themselves before judging them.

Edward was raised in Ashland, a small town filled with average people. From the day he was born, Edward proved he was anything but ordinary, he was a big fish in a small pond. A citizen from Ashland said “-eventually he knew more than anybody, even Mr. Pinker, the librarian. He was a big fish, even then” (12).
Possibly the first crime that Edward committed was killing his older brother. This has significance on the psychological level because Edward’s older brother began to disagree with their mother’s world perspective and I believe this was the motivation for this crime. He loved his mother very much possibly to the point of Parent-Child Relational Problems and could not handle that his brother began to discredit her. Edward was not charged with killing his brother because they were burning a marsh and it was determined to be asphyxiation from the fire. It is suspicious because his brother was not in an area that was burned and his body was found with bruises.
Specifically social isolation. Social isolation is the lack of social interaction with society or friends (Miller, 2011), neither which Edward had because he was not fully educated by his creator yet. Edward was all by himself in the mansion up the hill after his creator died. Because the creator died before he could teach Edward the basic lifestyle etiquette, Edward had hid himself in the mansion the whole time void of social interactions until Peg decided to venture into the mansion in hopes of selling cosmetics and ended up bringing Edward back to her home. The social isolation that Edward experienced since the death of his creator was quickly eased from him after he got introduced to the townspeople. The talent Edward had for having scissor as his hand was impeccable. He managed to capture the attention and trust of the townspeople in a short amount of time he was there. However, the attention that Edward had when introduced to the townspeople was short lived after he was arrested by the police for breaking and entering a home. Edward went back to his mansion after a few unsuccessful attempt of reconciliation with the townspeople. The study by Ahmetoglu, Swami and Chamorro-Premuzic, (2010) stated that reconciliation tactic was used to maintain positive relationship but it did not worked for Edward when he was trying to get back on the good side of the
Eddie was average in school, but he loved to read. His schoolmates shunned Eddie because he was effeminate and shy. He had no friends. In 1944 Eddies brother Henry mysteriously died. ( In the Beginning)
After Edward found out about his cancer he spent his last days in the world joking around about life and trying to dodge all questions william asked him.For example, “or maybe he just wanted you to be straight with him,” I Say. “Straight?” “Straightforward,” I say, Just be your normal average guy and tell him what is bothering you, where it hurts,” “Ah,” my father says, “As in, ‘Doctor,Doctor! I’m dying, please cure me. ‘ Like that?” “Like that,” I say/ “Sort of, but-” “but we both know there is no cure for what i’ve got,” he says”(110-111). This Quote from the book shows how even in serious times he was in a way
Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27, 1906 in the town of La Crosse, Wisconsin to George and Augusta Gein. He had an elder brother, Henry, who was four years older. His father, George Gein was an inept farmer with a serious drinking problem. On the other hand, Augusta was a strong willed Christian who viewed life based on her religious beliefs. The more dominant influence in Ed's upbringing was naturally his mother. Augusta sternly instilled in her boys the innate “…immorality of the world and the twin dangers of alcohol and loose women” (Schechter, p.27). She preached endlessly to her boys about the sins of lust and “carnal desire” and depicted all women as whores, expect for herself obliviously. Augusta's strict view of life initiated Ed’s sexual confusion as an adolescent; “he was very ambiguous about his masculinity” (Fisher) and had considered transsexual surgeries on many occasions. His natural attraction towards girls clashed with his mother's threatening of never-ending damnation. A naturally shy and slightly effeminate boy, Ed never dated girl...
...ks Bella concerning her move with her father whether it has made her unhappy, she responds by changing the topic since she was getting uncomfortable and Edward’s eye had changed color due to the growing impatient. The eye contact made between the two made them to change the topic for varied reasons. The language between them and the nonverbal communication made the conversation between the two competent. They were attentive, had genuine interest, and asked honest questions and received honest answers. The communication strategies, which is characterized by nonverbal communication helps to draw the two protagonists together. The conversation scene in the movie is the best example of how relationship conversations begin and develop.
At the beginning of the novel Edward really didn’t have a destination about what he wanted to do with his life. At a young age Edward got secretly engaged to Lucy Steele, who was just as bossy and mean like as his mother and sister, but his mother disinherits Edward because Lucy has no money and comes from a different class. Mrs. Ferrars main concern is to make sure that her sons marry into wealth and a good social status. The Steeles weren’t as fortunate as the Ferrars. So therefore, Mrs. Ferrars wasn’t too happy when she found out about their engagement so, she disinherits Edward Ferrars. “All that Mrs. Ferrars could say to make him put an end to the engagement, assisted too as you may well suppose by my arguments, and Fanny's entreaties, was of no avail. Duty, affection, everything was disregarded. I never thought Edward so stubborn, so unfeeling before. His mother explained to him her liberal designs, in case of his marrying Miss Morton; told him she would settle on him the Norfolk estate, which, clear of land-tax, brings in a good thousand a-year; offered even, when matters grew desperate, to make it twelve hundred; and in opposition to this, if he still persisted in this low connection, represented to him the certain penury that must attend the match. His own two thousand pounds she protested should be his all; she would never see him again; and so far would she be from
reality. Edward Scissorhands is a film about a man with scissors for hands who was taken into the suburbs of his town after many years spent in isolation. The film relays a message of the good and bad of the individual and the conformity. In the film, Edward is the individual while the towns’ people represent society and the conformity. Edward is first rejected by society and tries to fit in, but then realises that he cannot please anyone no matter how hard he tries. He then rejects society and what they have caused him to become. ‘You blend and blend and blend, blending is the secret,’ this line has a double meaning of blending in making up as well as blending to fit in. The makeup itself has a second meaning, a mask used to cover up Edward and hide him from society. Burton exaggerates how perfect the town’s people are in order to place emphasis on their imperfections. Edward may look monstrous but the town’s people represent it. The concept of appearance vs. reality not only applies to the characters but also the castle and suburbia. The suburb of the town is depicted as perfect, picturesque, but this contrasts with the people of the town. Although they seem to be perfect, the town’s
Edward stares at the images of Kim before turning to look at Peggy talk and then gazes back at them again. The way he can’t stop looking at her indicates how Edward admires the young girl. When Peggy starts chatting about how Kim went to the high school prom with her boyfriend, Edward is in a world of his own. He concentrates on her face in the picture of the couple at their prom. Edward gazes at her pictures like she is the most fascinating person ever. Since Edward lived in the mansion with the inventor and unaccompanied for so long it is interesting to see his reaction to Kim. Furthermore, his infatuation with Kim just after seeing her pictures goes to confirm how isolated he is from
Edward VI is Elizabeth’s young and unhealthy half-brother. Edward actually is first crowned as king after their father dies. Since he was still somewhat young, he would’ve been able to be manipulated and influenced by others with royal ambitions. But everything changes when he passes away from illnesses while he was still quite young.
In particular, this theme is revealed in many occasions in the book. On page 56, Edward comes out of nowhere and saves Bella from a car accident that potentially could have taken her life. “Two long, white hands shot out protectively in front of me, and the van shuddered to a stop…” In similarity, towards the end of the movie, Edward saves Bella (who is alone) from being attacked by James. This makes us ask, “How are both of these scenes related?” However, both of these scenes are prominent in the movie and the book because they are so vital to the story. This shows how despite being far away, his protectiveness over Bella made him save her. This inflicts very positive characteristics on Edward, such as: bravery, selflessness, and compassion. The idea of love is what caused him to commit irrational actions in the most necessary
