Edward Kennedy Ellington, more commonly known by his nickname “Duke” was one of the most influential jazz musicians and composers in the world. He won 14 Grammy awards, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and won countless other awards for his accomplishments. Ellington has inspired jazz artists across the globe and is continuing to do so today even after his death. In this biography, I will be telling you about Duke’s journey to fame and success; beginning with his childhood, and then his education/career. Not much is known about Duke Ellington’s family life before fame. However, the support of his parents certainly helped him become the artist we know today. Ellington was born on April 29th, 1899 to Daisy and James Ellington in Washington D.C. His only sibling was his younger sister, Ruth (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2018). He was offered a college scholarship, but rejected it and decided to follow his dream of becoming a professional musician. “He was awarded, but did not accept a scholarship to Pratt Institute. He began to perform professionally at 17.” (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2018). By 1923, Ellington moved to New York and later that year he began playing in Broadway nightclubs. He also led smaller ensembles which eventually grew into a group of 10- piece ensemble over time. (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2018). Ellington was recognized for having a music group like no other. His sound was unique and stood out from other bands.
