Working with special education students, the learning styles in my classroom are extremely diverse. It is essential to take all the different learning styles in my classroom and utilize them in my lessons, in order for my students to be successful. Throughout a school day, I think it is important to have students use all their different intelligences, to make learning meaningful to every student. Piaget’s theory of constructivism states that humans create knowledge from their interactions between their experiences and ideas, and I relate strongly to this. Along with constructivism, the theory of discovery learning, from Piaget, Bruner, and Papert, is a theory I utilize in my teaching.
I not only want them to succeed in subjects but also grow as individuals. I plan to use the progressivism approach in my classroom because I believe that hands on education in a very effective way of learning. It helps students to get a first hand experience to see and feel what it is they are learning. I also think that working with groups in their classroom is very beneficial to students. By interacting with their peers they will learn how to share their ideas, accept others points of view and learn how to develop relationships , which is a very important part of life that will help them to succeed in their careers.
Teaching is a lifelong learning process. It involves the learning of new strategies, philosophies, and methods. I can learn from colleagues, parents, classes, and from the students themselves. I want my students to take responsibility for their learning. I want to give them the tools to help become successful in their life.
Having this strong connection with my students will help the child’s ambition to learn and come to class which is my goal. Showing my students how much I care about their education will also form a good relationship. I will do this by acknowledging their accomplishments as well as coming up with solutions when they fail. A Student-Student relationship is also important to me in order to have a positive environment in my classroom. I have realized that I have the power as an educator to promote good Student-Student relationships.
Teaching Philosophy The most important impact I want to have on students is that they remember me as a teacher who cares about their education. I want to leave an impact on each child’s life. My motivation to teach comes from a desire to help others and see student’s excitements as they learn new concepts. I believe teaching is my way to make a positive difference for each of my students. My approach to teaching is based on the belief that my purpose at any school is to serve the students.
I feel that problem solving is a well-desired skill for all children to learn because it will help them throughout their whole lives. I believe that John Dewey’s emphasis on a curriculum that is relevant to real-life is a good approach to teaching. If students can take their knowledge of something learned in class and apply it to any life situation that is a great accomplishment. I think that teachers should strive to adapt lessons that are comparable to incidents in reality because it provides for easier perception of the knowledge being taught. I agree with John Dewey’s theory in that the process of inquiry is an efficient method to use to learn commonsense tasks, or even complicated problems.
Every child needs education to increase knowledge. Education is an essential life experience for children, and I think it differs depending on whom it was taught by and how it was taught. Teaching is an important profession that provides children with opportunities to learn new things and gain knowledge for their future. My focus and vision for education are similar to the educational philosophy called progressivism. Progressivism is a student-centered philosophy.
I could go on at length, discussing all aspects of my praxis as an educator, however, that would lead to a paper of excruciating length. These aspects of my teaching pedagogy that are delivered in this praxis statement are those that I feel strongest about upholding. It is important for educators to value their students and the perspectives and cultures they bring to the classroom. Student-centered education is what I find to be the key to great teaching, and overall, is the greatest way to allow students to value and grow through their own self-exploratory and self-directed education. Valuing and appreciating each of your students is what makes teaching such an enlightening, uplifting profession.
In the future I would love to pursue my aspiration of travelling to teach young children as I have an interest in furthering my knowledge to make me a better person as well as the children. I believe that children are our future and each child has the potential to bring something unique and special to the world. Teaching is an important and honourable occupation that demands commitment and I am determined to do this. There are miracles, learning, healing, laughter, sharing and love every day in classrooms all around the world. A teacher has the opportunity to impact on young students’ lives in a positive way and in my opinion this is a huge privilege that shouldn’t be taken lightly which is why I know it is a career I will be fully committed to in the future as every child matters and I want to be able to give them the push start with they need in life.
