Educational Goals and Philosophy
Webster’s dictionary defines philosophy as the study of the causes and relations of things and ideas or the serene wisdom that comes from calm contemplation of life and the universe. As I write this educational philosophy statement I will look at the relations or nature of students and knowledge, the purpose of public education, what methods I will incorporate in teaching, the curriculum in elementary school, and my professional development plans. When I am through I hope that there is some wisdom in what I have said.
I feel that students or children are basically innocent and are shaped by their environment. Most children, I have found, want to feel good about themselves and want to be loved. Children who have not been shown love by a parent or someone close to them tend to act up. But if someone pays the slightest attention and lets them know that they care about child there can be a change in that child. I feel most children want to learn and they want to be taught is right.
Knowledge or what is learned is relative to the person, place and time. Not everyone learns in the same ways. I feel everyone is capable of learning but how much and what he or she learns is relative to that person in a certain place and time. Students who acquire knowledge quicker than others deserve to be taught in such a way that they are not held back. But on the other hand that student that is slower in learning also deserves to be taught in a way to prevent them from being left out or left behind.
Education is important in that it provides students with information and knowledge so they can function in the world. Education is knowledge that is passed from one person to another. Without it we would still be living in caves and trying to figure how to get from one place to another without having to walk. But as Rousseau ‘s philosophy was I want to be able to draw knowledge out of students. As a teacher I hope to be able to help my students discover the knowledge they will need and I hope to inspire them to always want to learn as much as they possible can. I hope to instill in them the thought that you are never too old to learn and you should learn something new everyday.

The dictionary defines the word philosophy as the general principles or laws of a field of knowledge, activity, etc. I, myself define philosophy as my beliefs, values, and opinion on a subject. Specifically in this paper, the subject I will be speaking about is my philosophy of education. What is my philosophy of education you might be asking? I will answer this question as well as talk about many other aspects of education. These aspects include the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purpose of public education, method, and curriculum.

My Educational philosophy is defined in becoming a teacher as a set of ideas and beliefs about education that guide the professional behavior of educators. Also included in educational philosophy are one’s beliefs about teaching and learning, students, knowledge and what is worth knowing. My five general purposes for philosophy of education are: to set goals of plan, to teach useful and relevant information, be aware of students learning styles, modeling positive cooperative behavior, to look for solutions and to make sure those solutions are working.

Education mean something different for everyone. Because of this, people have different views for the purpose of education. For some education can be very important and for others no so much. However, education is still present in some ways. Education is used for many things like advancing in the work place and helping out country compete against other countries. Some of these problems are obvious to the mass public, and some require a more in-depth analysis. One of the less obvious issues in education is the current philosophy in the classrooms. And, why does it matter to me?” To put it simply, the philosophy imbedded in the goals of education and teaching methods in a classroom affects the students’ futures. This topic was chosen because the philosophy in schools is often overlooked as the absolute core of educational issues. Many students understandably struggle with sitting in a classroom, uninterested. In addition to the constant stress and pressure of having good grades, students often ask why the given curriculum must be learned.
I think that the nature of knowledge is relative. Not all children can learn in the same environment. I believe that if a child is put in an environment in which they cannot learn they should be placed in another environment so that they can. Some students learn at a slow pace and others learn at a fast pace. Then there are the students that learn better by lectures and others that learn better by activities. If you mix these children in the same class, than there are usually some lost kids in the class? I know that in my experiences with school, I would have never made it in a normal classroom since I learned so much slower than the other kids did.
Rousseau said that children are born of innocents, being neither good nor bad, and the surrounding will create the child. On average, students are with educators more hours than with their families. The hours we have with these students have to be utilized and get the best out of them. So as teachers, we must set an example of good morals and display the love of teaching and make learning a desirable trait. Learning should be a self-gratifying experience not a dreaded encounter. We all love to be achievers. Teachers and educators must put forth the desire to see their student’s progress.

I am humble enough to say that I too remain a student, not just in the literal sense, but in life. As teachers, I believe it is our responsibility to provide an educational experience that motivates our students to discover their own hidden potentials and to hopefully achieve self-realization. This is especially important for young children, for it is with the combination of their innate learning ability and the influence of great educators that can account for their marvelous capacity of potential.
