The Purpose of Education

Throughout the history of the United States, education has constantly been evolving to the needs of society. Education’s main focus has ranged from teaching the youth religion, to preparing democratic citizens, to educating the general population on immigrants, and to finally educating/preparing citizens for the more industrial 20th century. Now, in the 21st century, in an ever changing global economy, the goal of education has somewhat become shrouded in a mysterious cloud of what the correct way to prepare the youth for their future lives should be. This question of what the purpose of education ought to be has had scholars debating for decades. Though scholars cannot come to a definitive answer, there is a general belief that the main goal of education should be to develop well rounded, critical thinking citizens. Educational institutions can achieve this by giving students a general knowledge of the world, by removing prejudices and instilling truths, and finally, by preparing students for the real world and their future occupations.
Education, and educational institutions around the world have a general belief that the goals of education are to produce democratic, free minded, critical thinking citizens. This is by no means an easy task, but it is one that must be done. One of the ways institutions try to do this is through compulsory liberal arts courses. Granted, this is not a common occurrence from country to county, but in America, it is present in almost all universities. Liberal arts programs are an important tool that educational institutions in America use to develop a general knowledge amongst students. ...utions to this however is simple. Colleges could adjust their curriculum to a more real-life one. By this I mean one that simulates real life working conditions such as lending out business students to local businesses as consultants and grading them on those aspects.
Just as the world is always changing, education is always changing with it. This in turn means educational institutions need to keep their curriculums and methods of education up to date to offer students the best possible chances of succeeding in life. Students put their hopes and dreams of a brighter future in the hands of these educational institutions, with the hope that it will make them free minded, critical thinking citizens, devoid of prejudices, always able to question traditions. The true purpose of education will continue to be debated as time goes on, but the general believes are profound.
