The longer she stayed in her marriage, the more she realizes that the passion she needed was not there with her husband, nor was the motherly affection she should have felt for her children. Lost in mixed emotion and longing to be free, Edna’s actions not only affect her husband life but also the future of her children. Even though Edna is selfish, in the end she realizes everything she has done will harm her two boys. She is not strong enough to be free without the love of Robert Lebrun and in the end decides she will not go back to the gilded cage of the life she led before. In the thoughts of her children and the life she is not strong enough to keep, she returns to the sea.
Man at that time would have wanted her to live as a " mother woman", "wom(a)n who idolized their children, worshiped their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering angels" (Chapter IV). That is why it is difficult to say whether the suicide is an act of desperation or to show the society that she is ready to die for her beliefs. To my mind, it only shows that she couldn't see any way out of the misery and she chose the suicide to protect her kids from social problems.
In Kate Chopin’s novel The Awakening, Edna Pontellier abandons the responsibility of her children with the realization that she cannot be a good mother for them in a restricted and unfulfilled position. Her feelings suggest that the capricious nature of children cause them to dehumanize their mothers, ultimately turning the role of a mother-woman into one with no freedom; it is a suppressing relationship Edna will not allow herself to be a part of. Edna’s decision to leave her family reveals that she must pursue a path of freedom in contrast to a life where she lives to fulfill only the needs of others. Knowing she cannot establish her true identity by living for her children’s happiness, Edna rebels against societal expectations and displays that one cannot define themselves solely through motherhood. Although both the mother-woman image and that of the individual artist play significant influences on Edna’s view of life, none of them are options to Edna due to the children.
However, near the end of the play she learns to love and respect Petruchio. It is evident that she honors Petruchio as her husband through her drastic change in attitude towards her family and friends. Before Katherine was married to Petruchio she was stubborn and resentful of her entire family. She believed that her father, Baptista, did not care for her as much as he did for her fairer sister, Bianca. She did not want to hear anybody’s opinions or advice, and she felt as if no one would ever want to marry her.
Her memory of running away from her Father and church when she was a young girl living in Kentucky shows how desperate she is to be free. However, Edna gives up her hopes of freedom for marriage in the hopes that all will fall into place afterwards. Edna’s expectation that marriage and children is proven false when she still is not happy with her life afterwards. She feels that life is worthless and that there should be more to what she is. Edna is not like the other creole mothers; she holds an affection for her children, but it comes and goes.
She doesn’t want to shame her father, however, she wants to ultimately be with the man she loves. In the novel, Kristen is almost raped by a man; nevertheless, she is afraid to tell her family because she fears she will be seen as a slut. Women did not have the right to choose the life they wanted for themselves their life was already planned for them as young girls. True love did not exist in the 14th century; fathers usually arranged the marriage of their daughter in order to maintain a good position in society. Edna's husband scolds her for her insensitivity to her children. Motherhood becomes another allusion that Edna must dispel. That final truth, the greater truth, can not coexist with the social, moral, or the biological obligations of motherhood. Edna's suicide is tragic and victorious.
The protagonist moved out of her husband’s house when she started earning her own money. She was obsessed with the idea of becoming an independent woman, and she only thought that she can only become independent when she is away from her husband. She abandoned Robert her husband and her children in her quest for self actualization. She strayed from her responsibilities as a mother and wife, and embraced her intense desire for self fulfillment which she never got in her relationships.
Hedda’s relationship with all three men ultimately created a life she was unhappy with thus leading her closer to her death. Her husband, who is suppose to the love of a young wives life meant nothing to Hedda. She treated Tesman as if he was her servant and used him to get whatever she wanted. But her selfishness came back to bite her because she felt completely condemned to life with Tesman which was boring and uneventful. Lovborg was the closest to loving a man who wasn't her father Hedda ever had but she pushed him away and ultimately helped Lovborg’s death arrive sooner then intended by giving him her pistol.
She really has no interest in her children and caring for them as a mother. I can blame Edna, because she knew what she was in for when she married Leonce. But, I also feel sorry for her because reality hit her too late, and she’s miserable. I felt like she thought maybe giving it a chance with this man and bearing children, that she may learn to enjoy this life. WRONG!!
